What program are you using to view the movies? You may just need to choose another. I have had very good luck using Cyberlink's PowerDVD.
It started 2 days ago, i was watching a dvd on my pc when half way through the movie it stopped and my pc froze. At first i thought is was just a one off thing but now when ever i start to play a dvd with any dvd playing software it freezes and a message pops up saying the programme has to close.
But the strange thing is. It can burn dvds and cd, everythink. It can read dvd game disks. It just carnt play DVD movies..
Edit: Ive just found out i carnt play dvd movies that are stored on my HDD, the same thing happens, an error then the programme closes down.
And sometimes the pc will crash altogether.
Any ideas y....

try installing k-lite codec.
if that doesn't work, uninstall all DVD software - reboot (very important) and then reinstall powerDVD.
since it won't play DVD's off the HD, its not the LG drive
Yeah i know now i thought i might try the dvds off of my HDD and they didnt work. LOL
If i uninstall all dvd player software, and it doesnt work how do i go about uninstalling all the codec's off of my pc. Just to see if it isnt a corrupt codec thats causing the problem.
I think ive found the problem, when i installed K-lite Codec pack, the setup warned me that it found missing and damaged DirectDraw files and a few codec file aswell. So what i did was delete the missing DirectDraw files from the reg and deleted the damaged ones. sáme for the codec's. Then i installed the latest verion of DX9.0c restarted and installed the codecs and restarted again.
And it still doesnt work.....
any ideas
ok have you checked your HD for errors? since directplay is/was corrupted - highly likely that other files have gone as well
reinstall your video card driver
reinstall windows - might be your only option, depends on how much corruption you got when the PC froze
I got it working. I uninstalled any codec i could and uninstalled all media players...Restarted then installed my graphic drivers...Restarted and installed DX9.0c December...Then installed all the media players again and restarted...And then it worked..
Thanks for ur help
well done, its a painfull process :D
