Suddenly AIM stops working...?..please help..

Hello all....please can someone help me.?
i have been using aim to speak to friends in the usa for over a year now,then about 3 weeks ago the thing will not connect..
it says connecting...
verifying name an password...
starting services...then comes back at the log on screen.??
i have been tolld to try using 3rd party like gaim...which i have installed and that gets 3/4 of the way through the connection process then locks..?...
any ideas.?
