Pc wont shut of after win 7 shutdown

Hey guys!

I've got a bit of a problem here, Im not sure is this the right forum to ask but I have this problem: MY PC wont shut down automatically.
When I shut down my win7 it exits comlpleatly, hardrive stops but the mobo wont. all the fans are still runing and the power light is still on. I can only turn it off holding the power button for a few sec. then it shuts down.
my sys:
MOBO: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2
CPU: DualCore Intel Pentium D 915, 2800 MHz (14 x 200)
VGA: ATI Radeon HD 4550 (128 MB)
sys mem: 2048 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)
HDD: WDC WD2500AVJS-63B6A0 ATA Device (232 GB, IDE)

Please help me out here! Im compleatly noob :)

-9800GTX+
-Corsair AX850
-2x4GB Corsair Vengeance
-WD Velociraptor 160GB HDD

Fans still run after "Shut Down" from Windows 7.

If I must start my own thread, I will. It doesn't look like anybody answered the OP's question, so I thought I would bump the thread.

Do you guys have any portable external hard drives connected to your system via USB? I've heard of those not shutting down correctly being a possible cause of a failed shutdown.

nope dont.

You can check in Device Manager the hardware who has the option "Power management" and in that tab select "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Usually network cards, USB, 1394 have that option.

Hi, I'll use this thread too as I have the same issue. I'm using a P67 Extreme4 Gen3 mobo with the following additional hardware:

PC case: Coolermaster 690 II Advanced
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core 3.3Ghz 6MB socket 1155
CPU cooling: Scythe Mugen 3 SCMG-3000 AMD/Intel CPU cooler
Motherboard: ASRock P67 B3 Extreme 4 Gen3 socket 1155
Memory 1: Kingston 4Gb DDR3 1333Mhz CL9
Memory 2: Kingston 4Gb DDR3 1333Mhz CL9
Solid State Disk: Crucial RealSSD 128Gb M4 2.5-inch 6GB/s SATA3
Gfx card 1: ATI HD6950 2Gb DDR5 PCI-express
Optical Drive 1: LG 24x GH24NS70 DVD-RW Dual Layer SATA
Power: Corsair TX650M 650W modular
Card reader: Apacer AE700 internal cardreader 24 in 1 with USB port

The PC works perfect except for 1 thing -> whenever I do Start -> Shutdown, windows itself will shutdown (and the screen will go into sleepmode as normal) but the PC hardware itself keeps running and wont shutdown.

Also keeping the powerbutton pressed for several seconds wont turn off the PC, I have to manual use the switch on the back of the PSU to turn it off.

Ive scanned several forums looking for a solution, like 'allowing this device to shutdown to save power' option on different pieces of hardware at the Hardware Devices section, but none seem to help.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? Is this software or hardware related? This is a brand new PC, bought pre-build (without OS) from the store.

Motherboard is running on Bios 1.10 (preinstalled).

Guys - I have had this problem before, and i seem to remeber one cause for me was having something other than s3 sleep state enabled in bios.Another cause can be graphics drivers - particularly ATI drivers - so try latest drivers or roll back - whichever is appropiate. Last suggestion is a USB device such as mouse or keyboard can stop the machine going to sleep and indeed shutting down or try disabling legacy usb support in bios.

All i can think of for now - try one at a time until you find the culprit.

I went crazy on the same power down issue, to find out in my configuration was caused by the PSU.

Everything has already been said about check Power management in Device Manager or S3 state is correct.
If it did not work, try if possible with another power supply.
If you don't have, try booting with a live Linux distro, though even in this case the computer does not shut down is a incompatibility issue with the power supply.


This problem occurs regardless of the operating system installed.
