FM2A85x xtreme6 setup woes Please help me

I'm really stumped!'t
Cant complete Win 7 install!
I've tried 3 different builds, 2 on DVD & 1 on USB.
This is a clean instaLL ON a newly formatted partition

I keep getting an Unexpected error or unexpected restart message. "click OK" Then I get "starting services" and it loops back to the "install windows" window with the same error message.

The board is at the default settings except for the fan speed, "wake up on usb" and default graphics which I reset to "onboard"

I'v shuffled the RAM around in the usual way.
The temps are reporting OK as is the voltage from the PSU

The system browser reports COM A is activated. Dont know weather that's normal or not.
The tack readings for fan2 flash on & off and are all over the place but the fans connected to it seem to operate normally..

Went through the internet UFEI update and got a success message.

Nothing is attached to this board except aa USB mouse & keyboard & the front panel header.

Please let me know if you have any ideas!!!

I noticed in your (Profile Sys Specs) Specs several drives. If those specs are the system your trying to work with the Asrock board listed as your problem you might try getting rid of everything except the drive you are trying to install to and the DVD. When building my FM2 system using the same MB I too had some problems with both SSD and HDD plugged in. Removed the HDD (SSD as system drive) did a quick install of Windows 7 Home and then everything after was smooth. Of course I have less hair now too. Good luck!

It sure tastes like a hardware problem. I just didn't have a clue where to start.
I'll give that a try as soon as the memtest finishes.
So far so good. It seems like people have had mixed results with G-skill ram.

I know what you mean about the hair.

In doing research for parts to do my build, I read a lot of references to troubles with Gskill 1866 RAM, most comments were that a BIOS update would fix those glitches, they would get the RAM up at lower settings, get eveything else sorted out then do BIOS update and the RAM could then even be OCK'd. I had 16 GB of Gskill 1333 (4x2x2) and it works fine for me. I'm not an Ock'r so it's all good. I also first tried a WD Velociraptor 300 HDD I had around and couldn't get the system to recognize it (SATA or SATA II) I think. After getting the SSD and a 1TB WD SATA III up and running I did get the Velociraptor to be recognized.
Trial and error over and over...such is the life of PC users/builders.

I used to have the same problems building Hot Rods. LOL

Well I tried your technique and it did the same thing. It goes all the way to starting services on the install &then loops.
Sometimes the graphics shut down & the system hangs.
Sometimes I guess the BIOS won't initilaize & I have to clear the CMOS
Sometime I get a SATA related (I think) error code.

As soon as I updated the UEFI the board OC'd my 1866 ram to 1866 (I know that sounds a little crazy. It is)
It sees all of my drives & alwasys did.

Hey do you know what the big GD secret is with these Dr. Debug codes? I really don't understand ASRock. It took them a week to answer a simple question.

I have no desire to make configuring this board a career move.

It sounds to me like you have a BAD MOTHERBOARD... Asrock only has like a 2% return rate so they are good equipment generally. Sometimes we have the luck...I have had bad luck 95% with SSD's. It took me 3 RMA's with 2 differant brands before I got one that worked at all. I almost gave up on the SSD trail for the near future. When I had the problems I mentioned before I really thought that was it! But the clouds moved out and the sun shined in.
I've built every system I have ever had, except back when I first bought an Amiga and a Commodore 128, and it just seems that the further things advance the more headaches we get. My wife refused to do the whole PC thing with me and bought an Apple. It worked for almost 2 years to the day and died. It now sits in the garage in my recycle pile. So...I guess it just matters what we have patience for. Let me know how things work out.

It kinda feels that way to me as well.

I just sort of expected someone to point out something stupid I was doing and hoping to dodge the whole "take it back apart, shipping, waiting & then who knows" bullet
This is the third bad Mobo in a row for me so I decided to go with something highly rated etc, etc. pffftt....

I'll probably wait till Tues I see if any sage advice crops up.



I've been rolling my own since AT's w/Vesa cards.
I needed to put 4 M of RAM in one & the card was huge with a boatload of 128 K chips that I had to install.
When you get worked up over building a PC you can always count on your lady asking the dreaded "WHY" question w/the raised eyebrow.
I kind of resent Apple products. I guess I can see her point......

Hmmm, COM A huh? These errors sound ACPI related.

Attach your mouse and or keyboard to the REAR I/O PANELs USB 2.0 port(s), reset the "wake up on USB' you changed(USB Keyboard/Remote Power On and or USB Mouse Power On) back to Disabled.

Also, if you use the USB flash to install be sure it too is connected to the rear USB 2.0 port. In this instance as you only have two rear USB 2.0 ports I'd suggest installing from DVD using an internal CD/DVD drive. If on the ridiculous chance you're using a USB CD/DVD drive(so very NOT recommended to install an OS with!)) make sure it too is connected to a USB 2.0 port.

Now retry installing. With only using USB 2.0 ports. Nothing connected to any of the USB 3.0 ports.

I read an earlier post by you that said essentially the same thing which is what I did from the outset.
I then flashed the BIOS on a couple subsequent install attempts.
COMA has been active from the outset & I have been unable to deactivate it. I thought it was a weirdness particular to this board.
The USB install was a desperate measure and yielded almost identical results form the F Panel.
Then on another users advice I disconnected all but the system drive & tried again with the same result.
Just to be absolutely sure I will change the USB settings back. I'll also pull my case fans. Who knows. One of them doesn't match. I have 3 80 mm's running on Case Fan 2. Power requirements do not exceed the boards capacity & I have a feeling that is approaching lunatic caution but I'll try anything.

I have a feeling it's going to be the SOS but I will be sure in about an hour from now.
