Question Silver and Red Capacitor came off Motherboard What Should I Do?

    Hello,

Have an ASUS motherboard and while cleaning it, a silver and red capacitor came off the board. The two pins are still soldered to the motherboard and sticking up.
Should I try and push the capacitor back onto the pins somehow or re-solder it back on?
Should I buy an entire new capacitor and use that?

Not an electrician so I'm no expert but looking for good advice.

    Thanks!

    M.

I would push it back on but make 100% sure you have the polarity right, the + and - terminals on the cap lid

if you want a proper repair I would take it to a local electrical repair shop and ask them to solder on a new one,but just pushed on would work I think

IMO, you cannot push the capacitor back on the pins and expect it to work correctly. Those two capacitors are damaged beyond repair at this point, they need to be replaced, if possible. It also depends on the type of capacitor, if there is any chance they will work just stuck back on the pins.

At worst, putting the capacitor body back on the pins will result in a low resistance connection across that point, a short circuit where the capacitor once was. That could damage other parts on the board. Or if the capacitor works at all, the connection will be bad or intermittent.

    Yup!
Your in deep here as the warranty is gone, the cap has the code on it. You need a quality replacement of equal value, then solder it in. I can't understand how you could pull a cap off the motherboard while cleaning it? I would pay someone to do the work, if your not comfy with it depending on the boards value of course. Photo's always help, or at least we can have a good laugh about it.
