Default ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe

hi the chipset cooler has packed up on mobo (the fan has stopped totally) tried cleaning no signs of it melting unsure how long it has been like that, question is is it safe to use pc with the fan on chipset no doing anything so in effectall it is is a passive cooler now. thanks in advance - wil ltry and pick up a new one asap.

Most systems will run fine without active cooling on the chipset. Odds are very slim at the worst that you will damage the mainboard. Chances are that the worst you'll see will be a lack of stability (regular crashes) if the chipset is getting too hot.

That depends on the system, but for this specific one it's probably fine. That said, it's not that hard nor that expensive to just get a new fan. Just grab the appropriate size off of on online retailer. I'd recommend Jab-Tech.com for cooling supplies. You'll end up paying ten bucks at Newegg... Of course, I'm assuming you're American. No idea where you'd shop otherwise.
