Common sense dictates that submerging your high-end PC in cooking oil is not a good idea. But, of course, engineering feats and science breakthroughs were made possible by those who dared to explore the realms of the non-conventional. Members of the Munich-based THG lab are only too happy to confirm this fact. And not only did we find that our AMD Athlon FX-55 and GeForce 6800 Ultra equipped system didn't short out when we filled the sealed shut PC case with cooking oil - but the non-conductive properties of the liquid coupled created a totally cool and quiet high-end PC, devoid of the noise pollution of fans. The PC case - or should we say tank - also offered a new and novel way to display and show off your PC components. http://www17.tomshardware.com/2006/0..._out_the_fans/

Bet ya its Silent... other than the Hard drive and PSU (which was not submerged for reasons that should not have to be explained).
My friends and I are temped to do a similar project with some older equipment that isn't worth much just for fun. (the parts will most likely not be used afterwards, just something to do with spare/old parts. it will aslo become a folding machine for as long as the compnents hold up.

I cannot see how this is innovative at all. It serves no useful purpose and does not cool any better than stock air. As for being silent, AMDlover is 100% correct, you still gotta listen to the PSU and hard drive. Also, building a leak proof case is going to be a nightmare. Tomshardware needs to leave it running for more than 1 day and give updates as to how long it takes for the case to start leaking.
As for overclocking, I doubt that it would be able to handle the temps and without some form of circulation or cooling, it would certainly get too hot. And I won't even get started on the voiding of warranties.....

This btw was done back in the late 90's by 2 people but using transformer oil (which while certainly no where near as cheap as vegetable oil it is made for this type of use) on a VooDoo2 SLI setup (that was highend hardware back then). |
