Default Computer cooled with 8 gallons of cooking oil.

Move over water cooling lol.

Common sense dictates that submerging your high-end PC in cooking oil is not a good idea. But, of course, engineering feats and science breakthroughs were made possible by those who dared to explore the realms of the non-conventional. Members of the Munich-based THG lab are only too happy to confirm this fact. And not only did we find that our AMD Athlon FX-55 and GeForce 6800 Ultra equipped system didn't short out when we filled the sealed shut PC case with cooking oil - but the non-conductive properties of the liquid coupled created a totally cool and quiet high-end PC, devoid of the noise pollution of fans. The PC case - or should we say tank - also offered a new and novel way to display and show off your PC components.

actually, it is much older than that and tomshardware is a very biased site to get any information from. While this was almost a neat experiment, it is completely useless and does not cool any better. And when you are done, you have all that contaminated oil to dispose of, never mind the nightmare of actually cleaning the parts. Has to be one of the dumbest experiments of the modern era using such nice high end parts. I give it 2 thumbs and a toe down.

Bet ya its Silent... other than the Hard drive and PSU (which was not submerged for reasons that should not have to be explained).

My friends and I are temped to do a similar project with some older equipment that isn't worth much just for fun. (the parts will most likely not be used afterwards, just something to do with spare/old parts. it will aslo become a folding machine for as long as the compnents hold up.

I cannot see how this is innovative at all. It serves no useful purpose and does not cool any better than stock air. As for being silent, AMDlover is 100% correct, you still gotta listen to the PSU and hard drive. Also, building a leak proof case is going to be a nightmare. Tomshardware needs to leave it running for more than 1 day and give updates as to how long it takes for the case to start leaking.

As for overclocking, I doubt that it would be able to handle the temps and without some form of circulation or cooling, it would certainly get too hot. And I won't even get started on the voiding of warranties.....

Innovative?

This btw was done back in the late 90's by 2 people but using transformer oil (which while certainly no where near as cheap as vegetable oil it is made for this type of use) on a VooDoo2 SLI setup (that was highend hardware back then).
