A lot of it depends on your budget. If you're looking for relatively low-cost answers, then the Arctic Cooler solution should work. If, on the other hand, you have some extra to spend for results (and are willing to go ahead and remove the mainboard to install it), I have been greatly impressed with the new heatpipe/TEC units that are available.

If you want really good results, you need one of the big boys, either the THermalright Ultra-120 or the Noctua NU-12. If you can find one, the Thermalright XP120 or even the XP-90 will also work quite well for that CPU. If you want to run 3GHz 24/7, there is no substitute for water cooling and the prices are getting reasonable for a very good water setup, and the results will amaze you. I ran my 165 @ 2.95GHz 24/7 and my idle was around 30C and the full load while running dual prime and many other tasks was 40C. With really good air, you should be able to keep it under 50C. Work on case airflow too as that is always worth a few C.

XP-90 FTW. Can't remember if LGA775 needs special backplate for XP series, but if not, it's the best. XP-90 + 92mm Panaflo L1B/L1A/M1A = super cool, super quiet. I've got my X2 to 2.5GHz with no heat issue. Could probably bring it to 2.6-2.7, if I wanted.

Casecutter, definitely not going water. What was your temps with 3.0ghz on air? Yea i was looking at the xp-90. I am not going to buy it online, i will be going to a local computer shop that is almost like newegg except they dont have that much stuff compared to newegg. Anyway how good would the artic cooler be? I mean with the stock cooler it is at 33c idle and 55c load.

I never ran the XP-90 on my 165, but I bet it would keep you in the mid-high 40's load, and the better the fan the better it works. I used a 120MM fan on it rotated 45 degrees and I could still use the stock 92MM fan clips to mount it. I don't think the Artic Freezer is going to do much more than the stock Opteron cooler, but the XP-90 is definitely worth it. If I remember correctly, my temps on air were abut the same as yours as I was using the AC Freezer 64. The XP90>Freezer 64.

The xp90 is twice the $$, but i shall look into it today, thanks for the 2 cents.

I ended up getting the zalman cnps9700. Running 311x9 - 2800mhz with 1.45vcore at 26c idle and 48c prime95 dual load. Price was a bit steep, but i didn't want to wait for shipping, and was gonna go with a xp120 but the one i found at the store was aluminum =\ same with the xp90. The hsf also keeps my ram cool too, so i am happy ^_^. Grabbed a zalman vf900 too and now i dont have artifacts but i can't oc any higher anyway.

Excellent, and those temps sound very good. PLUS, I left out one very important fact with regards to how I got lower temps. I had removed my IHS. It was only good for about 2-3C on air and maybe 5C on water, so unless your temps were bad it wouldn't be worth it. If you ask me, your temps are very good for air.
