DIY small, touchscreen monitor

I'm brainstorming about what I want to put in my network server, and one of the things I came up with is a relatively small touchscreen monitor to mount on top of the case. My primary reason for this is to have a low power consuming screen and to remove the need for a mouse. I know it seems excessive, but I also want to do it for the geek-factor ;).

So, I'm pretty much looking for two things: a small LCD monitor 7-9" and a touchscreen kit. Hopefully it will be relatively cheap. One of my concerns, however, is if there is any software available for using the touchscreen on linux.
