Default Graphics Card for Dimension 4600 AGP

I need to find a graphics card that will work with my AGP slot and 250w PSU because I don't want to buy a new PSU/motherboard etc. I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128 MB. Dell reccomended this card but is there something better I can get that will work with my 250w PSU?

Default Re: Graphics Card for Dimension 4600 AGP

There is indeed a much better option. That GPU you linked to, in modern terms is utter rubbish. Dell should be ashamed of themselves for charging that kind of price for pre-historic hardware. I saw a couple of second hand 9550's at a computer fare being sold for about £3(~$5).

ati'S hd 3850 AGP is the current AGP performance king. The AGP 4650 is newer, but has a 128bit RAM Bus and only GDDR2 RAM compared to GDDR3 and a 256 bit bus on the 3850.

Newegg are selling the 3850 for just under $10 more than the crap Dell wants you to buy: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100228L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards Check the power requirements though as your 250W PSU is a bit limiting.

If you're upgrading in the hope of playing some modern games, the Dell suggestion will still be utterly useless. Sure, the Dell suggestion is technically a better GPU than your current one, but they're both prehistoric. Playable frame rates in most modern games just won't happen. Even with the 3850 though, your CPU and RAM combo will bottle neck it.

IMO, save your cash and put it towards a new computer fund if gaming is your thing. If you have no intention of gaming or 3D reendering then your current GPU is fine for 2D.
