Default Ping seems kind of high in games, what can I do?

Hey guys, my cable internet service is through Charter and I have their 5meg package. I would think that 5megs would be quite fast for online gaming and it is for the most part, but, in most games that I play I ping at around 100-200 and I see most people below 90 in game, so I was wondering, am I missing something here or not have something configured right in my internet setup, or is their a way to test how fast of a connection I am getting to see where I can improve? I do have latest drivers and all for my realtek ethernet controller. This goes for most all games I play online, and alot of servers wont let me on cause they say it is for low ping computers only; And most of the time I am around 160.

thanx in advance

Damn, I never paid attention to my ping in games, but does it change when gaming online or is it the same as if you just were at your desktop and test the ping.

Either way mine is like 6-10ms usually 8 or 9 like 96% of the time.

Not sure why yours is so high, unless it changes while gaming online, I never checked or cared too I guess the luxury of a fiber line and not having any latency lag really.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test

Use those and report your results, see if it's the same as what it says when you game.

Like I said, I never needed to look nor cared everything was just smooth sailing but on the desktop with no gaming going on that pingtest I get around 8 or 9 all the time.

**EDIT**

The Problem may also be with your Realtek gigabit controller, I've had some issues with Realtek controllers, was easily solved with a pci Ethernet card from Intel. I also don't recall any issues with my Marvell one, on an old machine that died, it ran really good.

It depends on the path your connection is taking to the game server. I have seen my connection from Detroit to New York take a path from Chicago - Denver - Los Angeles - Phoenix - Dallas - Atlanta - Boston - New York.

Yeah, that's true, I forgot to think of that lol.

I guess I'm spoiled on my stupid fast fiber line, I've never had latency lag or any issues at least nothing I notice so I never bothered to check my ping etc, from the games servers standpoint.
