would drive letters clash with slave

Wasn’t sure weather to post this under windows or hard disks, but here goes.

i just received a new Seagate barracuda 120gig and want to transfer my data of my old 60 gig deathstar to it. My plan is to format c:\ on the old drive and boot it as a slave drive an copy the data off. I wanted to know would my drive letters clash as i have D:\ , F:\ on both.?

Woah, hold up. Unless I'm reading that wrong, you said you were going to 'format c:\', as in the old drive, then hook it up with the new drive and copy the data across? Formatting the old drive will get rid of the data, so there won't be much left to copy.

Depending what file system you're got, there's a couple ways to go about this. Do you know what file system it is? FAT32 / NTFS?

sorry i wasnt clearer, i was going to format c:\ as i did not want the os detected at boot up with my new hard disks os.

the data i want is on the d,e and f drive of the old hard disk.

d is fat and e and f is ntfs

Ok, I'm just gonna give a simple explanation here of how I'd do this, maybe it would help.

We'll call your old hard drive A, and new one B.

Make B your master drive on the IDE channel, and hook it up and install windows and get it alls et up how you want to run on the new system, you may have already done this, but ok.

Then, without formatting or doing anything special to Drive A, hook that up as secondary on your IDE channel, and boot. The C,D,E and whatever drives you got on there will automatically become D,E,F etc. (as long as you only have a C: on drive B)
Windows doesnt write the drive letters to the disk, it reads the partitions on the disk and assigns them drive letters, so basically your old partitions on drive A will show up after the partitions on the new drive B.

Simple: Hook up A as a second hard drive, and it should boot the windows installed on B, then just copy your data, and shazaam, go have some form of alcohol.

thanks for the help

i did as you said and booted B as master and A as slave but it hung in IDE detection for about 10 seconds then i hit power.
Did i need to wait longer for it to detect the drive configuration, normally its instant.

i tried booting as slave again except waiting for it to detect the new configuration, it did but then it asked for a system disk. I had it set to boot hhd-0 first which is my new one hhd-1 second and cd 3rd.
how to get it 2 boot in to my new disk?

Well, it sounds like you dont have Windows installed on the new drive yet. You need to intall Windows on the new disk first, thats why it isn't booting.

i currently am in the new drives windows. ( i can get in when it is jst this drive and no slave drive)

make sure you have the jumpers correctly set for the configuration you want. :)

yup the jumpers were right

i gave up anyway and copyed it alll off via the network on 2 another system and then jst copying over to my new disk.

my os/s were xp home i have heard that i would of needed dynamic disk surport for 2 have booted with booth havin os's on.
