Make sure the remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running. if it isn't start it and set its startup type to automatic. The print Spooler service needs this to function.

So does almost everything else. You'd be complaining about shutdown messages if RPC weren't running.

Make sure that he doesn't have any of the services that may have been installed with the printer software disabled. The Print Spooler may be dependant on these and therefor not start.

I think he was wondering if you have Service Pack 2 installed on that box and if so, if that was the cause of your problem.

Check XP's inbuilt firewall first and then see if updated drivers are available for the printer that suit SP2.
