Well I have managed to swap the SATA hard drive for another 80GB 7200 and purchase a gigabyte nvidia FX5700 VGA card.
and finally turned the system on for the first time :D
after getting into the bios I found that the cpu temp was running at around 62 degC is this normal? it said in the bios between 60 and 90 is the range but I thought you guys ran at 40 to 50 deg?

What CPU cooler are you using? Also, did you put some type of Thermal Interface Material/Grease in between the CPU and the heatsink?

Also, you didn't happen to mount the HSF backwards did you?

I am using the HSF from the AMD box that the 2500xp came in and I mounted it as per the instruction and it fitted perfectly. there wasnt any stcker over the heat phase material it had a plastic cover on the HSF assembly and I just removed that prior to installing.
its sitting perfectly squar over the cpu and on the little rubber things on the top of the cpu.
I had to pushdown on the clip with a screw driver to get the clip over the tags and thats it.
Do you think the cpu is running to hot? :?:

You're going to want some Arctic Silver or a similar thermal compound along with a perlacement HSF. The ones that come with the retail package suck.

Disagree about the retail fans. Have built a couple of 2500 Bartons with stock hsf and Arcic Silver, no overclock, good case cooling, worked fine.

well I made a mistake re the VGA card its actually a FX 5200 sorry. and I have just installed window with a 40gig partition on the hard drive etc. temps are still in the 60 deg range amd its dam cold here at the moment.
I will see how this set up fairs and If need be go for an aftermarket HSF etc.
do you think its safe to overclock? if so how? I can adjust the fsb and vcore in the bios I guess you guys know what I am looking at so if you could point me in the right direction I would be grateful.
I also opted for a cdrw as I hear there are still issues out there on dvd formatts etc I hop I can still do some gaming any ideas on a good game to try out first time?
And I would like to thenk you guys for the help :!:
I hope to put in a 10000 raptor HD and go for a AMD 64 chip and MOB next build but for now I wanna play with what I got.

Thanks again

done think about overclocking with the stock cooler, especially with temps like that. get a good copper cooler.
for overclocking advice the search function on the forum and google would be the best places to look as the question has been asked loads of times before.

Yeah, they work. They won't burn out or anything, but you'll need a propper HSF for OCing.

In any case, some Arctic silver alone would bring the temps down enough, if no OCing is to be done.
