Default Seagate or Western Digital HDD??

My maxtor diamond plus 9 hdd recently became corrupt and no data was recoverable.

So now i need to replace it. I'm looking for something around the 200g mark.

Between:
Seagate Barracuda 200GB 7200RPM(8Mb Cache)
Western Digital 200G 7200rpm HDD(8Mb Cache)

I was just wondering what you guys have had luck with, and if you had any recommendations on reliablility.

The differnce in price is minimal.

Western Digital 200G SATA 7200 rpm HDD $155.00

I understand that SATA is a faster data transfer, but will it work with my epox 8k3a+ motherboard?

Do you need a compatible mb?

The JB series of WD drives carry a 3yr warranty and unless you get an SATA controller card then SATA drives won't work with your 8K3A+.

I've just added a WD 200GB to my compliment my WD120GB, I have always had WD drives and only ever had problems with one, returned it under warranty for replacement. Seagate and WD are on par, Samsung is probably quieter and I personally wouldn't go near maxtor, their failure rate is well recorded.

I'd say the difference in quality is even more minimal no matter which of the 3 major harddrive brands you go with, but if you want to shoot for a really quiet drive I would pick the Seagate brand over the W.D. from past experiences.

I install and fix computers. I have recently had three Western Digital drives 120gb ones die in 18 months in customers machines. Seagates win the reliability stakes as far as i am concerned. Get a Seagate SATA drive with NCQ and it will handle the new SATA drives as well.
