Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
Not much action here for Linux. My system is a new machine with 2 physical SATA drives in it, each drive with a Vista partition. I booted from a live 5.1.1 Knoppix dvd. Although Knoppix boots, it does not find the hard drives.
cat /proc/partitions
returns:

The ISO file that I used for the image check summed alright.
The Box is a Shuttle, The motherboard ... well I hope this helps. It's Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Dual Core Processor, with Intel G33 Express chipset.
The lspci -v command was displayed after a failsafe startup. Here is the output.

I'm thinking this may be hardware related, to the motherboard chipset (?) Since this is a hardware forum ... thought I'd try here.
Got alot to learn about both hardware and Linux, but I'm trying. I also posted to Knoppix here if anyone is interested.

Re: Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
You may need a SATA driver installed during the Knoppix installation so that Linux can find your drive. I know my motherboard driver disk has linux drivers in addition to the Windows drivers. ..."Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver" is the Windows method during install... . It's been awhile since I installed any version of Linux but I believe there is prolly an option at some point during install to use a floppy (or USB) to install the necessary drivers.

Re: Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
I'm with PrairieDawg, the Knoppix distro is probably older than you motherboard chipset so there's no support for the onboard SATA

Re: Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
You might also see about downloading a newer version of the distro. I know that newer kernels have supported my SATA drives upon installation.

Re: Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
Thanks for your response you guys. I'm really with all of you, I think the SATA support is not in this Knoppix distro. After your posts id did some looking at how to go about adding the linux SATA drivers, well it looked pretty daunting to this cowpoke. I really like the idea of finding a new distro, but it seems like quite some time since the expected new Knoppix release has been announced, and I don't seem to be able to find newer than my 5.1.1. I may have to wait for that, none the less, or find a different way.
Thanks for the ideas!

Re: Knoppix doesn't find hard drive
might want to try fedora core 7 or ubuntu 8 as a live cd distro. A friend of mine has an Intel MicroATX mbob with the Intel G33 Express chipset and his system booted up fine with both.
