Did any of you guys bother to actually test this card for quality of build? Did you notice anything non-reference on it?

I am curious because a number of people including myself have already had these cards and been testing them for the past two weeks. They are, to put it bluntly, horrible. The stock clocks do not hold up to long ATITool artifact tests, will likely fail FurMark tests due to excessive VRM heat, as well as fail in successfully completing 3DMArk06 triangle batch tests for extended periods of time. This basically goes for all the cards we tested so far (at least 10+ cards) and has been discussed to death on NCIX forums as well as XS. Anyways, take a look at the following links (to list only a few)...

and there is some useful info here...

Looks like this will be plaguing the upcoming non-reference designs as well as this has already been observed at Expreview when looking at the 4870 PCS+ from PowerColor (see http://en.expreview.com/2008/08/13/p...gn-worse-bios/). But let's see...

Update: PowerColor 4870 PCS+ is exhibiting the same sort of problems. You can read more here...http://en.expreview.com/2008/08/23/p...-issues-check/

I have a stock Sapphire 4870 that I have set to a 790MHz core and 1100MHz memory through CCC...it runs like a champ...no ATITool artifacts after hours of running. The point is....this overclocked card is just a CCC overclock under warranty, nothing special.

Using the AMD OC tool / profile change ninja trick, I tested the max core clock before I would get artifacts. I ran into a few artifacts at 840Mhz and a lot at 845MHz. I can run the GPU at 835MHz without seeing artifacts in ATITool.

I am not trying to flaunt my e**** here, but these "super special" OC cards are just using settings that everyone can do in CCC. I don't see the point in paying extra money for one of these. If an 850MHz and above 4870 rolled out then that would be something worth considering though.

I'm pretty confident in saying you will not see anything like that for a very very long time, if ever. I think the highest OC that will be rolled out may be 815MHZ or 820MHz on the core. Memory will never pass 1100MHz.

I do not foresee any manufacturer breaking from the reference design enough to allow for any crazy 4870s to be put out. The XOC certainly does not. It is a plain old reference card with an enhanced BIOS and a sticker.

None of your links work, I'm trying to find the location of the posts by searching the various forums listed...but unfotunately I can't find them. If you could fix the link issue, I'd appreciate it as I'm looking to get one of these, or a similiarlley factory OC'd card. Thnx.
