Default Re: XFX nForce 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard

I'm helping a friend set up an XFX nForce 790i Ultra. My build is a 2 year old AMD Dual Core on an Asus Mobo. Asus recommended several particular brands (including Model numbers) of the DDR2 Ram to use. I recall this choice as being critical in correctly setting up the rig.
XFX makes no recommendation, either in the manual or on their phone support. I find this rather frustrating! I would hate to spend $200 to $700 on DDR3 RAM, only to find it runs incorrectly.
My friend is using an Intel Q9300 CPU running at 1333Mhz. Must the memory also be 1333? What about latency? The choices are confusing, to say the least. I would think XFX could be more helpful.
