File Folder won't open
Alright, I'm puzzled.
I just made a new build with a legal copy of Windows XP Pro, SP2, did all updates, installed all my programs and everything was running fine for a few weeks.
Main Build:
Antec 900 Case
Samsung 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor (226CW) x 2
Ultra X2 750W Modular Power Supply (ULT40122)
ASUS P5E-VM HDMI Motherboard
Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz Processor
Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 Ram (2 x 1GB)
Syba 4 x USB 2.0 via PCI slot
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 500GB 7200rpm, 32MB Cache SATA HDD x2 (Mirror Raid)
Atech Flash XM-28U (28 in 1) Memory Card Reader
Samsung 20x SATA DVD Burner x 2
Logitech diNovo Edge Keyboard
Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
External Drive connected to D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit router (DIR-655):

As I said, everything was great for a while, then I started getting BSOD errors. They were all IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, but related to various files (or in some cases no files were listed). One that came up a decent amount was classpnp.sys
I did the standard MemTest for 24 hours and was at 14,500% with no errors or something like that. When I looked into this I found that there was a bios setting that allows the OS to manage the setting instead of the bios. When I did that, it seems that the BSOD errors have gone away, but around the same time, a new problem came up. Anytime I click on a folder, my computer, etc... or try to go start, run, C: (or D:, etc...), it won't open the destination. The targets for the folders are correct, and where they are supposed to be.
So, first step I switched the bios setting back. BSOD hasn't returned, but the folder problem still persists. I checked the registry entry for the open command in the folder, shell, open, command of the root key and it was what it was supposed to be. I even deleted the shell entry from the directory and folder keys, and restored them from kelly's site. I ran the sfc /scannow from my xp pro sp2 disc. Nothing helps. Kinda makes my sweet build useless if I can't navigate around my folders.
One thing I do notice is that in the registry, root key, folder, shell, open...there are two things called browserflags and explorer flags...the value for them are 0x00000010 (16) and 0x00000012 (18) respectively.
Anyone who's ever seen a BSOD recognizes the format. I'm wondering, if these are different to avoid the BSOD, but at the same time are causing the folders not to open.
Also, my bios is up to date, all drivers and windows updates are up to date as well. I'm behind a windows firewall and the router firewall. I use Norton Antivirus corporate edition and daily scans 5 or 6 levels deep turn up nothing. I use firefox juiced up with some add-ons and don't visit and questionable sites.

Maybe the folders are corrupted. I had that problem in a floppy disc/disk once. I had it again when I passed another floppy in a big magnet for school experiment.
Anyway, if there is no important data in there, you can always try reformatting.

you lost me...it's not just random folders...it's every folder...regardless of partition/drive.
even start, run c: doesn't open the drive
start, run d: (the other partition) doesn't open
start, run e: (a dvd writer) starts spinning the drive, but doesn't do anything after that (i.e. nothing opens).

Sounds corrupted to me. I don't see any way out of it besides a fresh install. Multiple BSOD's have a way of killing a perfectly good running OS.
PS: Norton's is garbage and you'd be better off with any of the many free AV's and windows firewall. Nortons hogs alot of resources for little benefit and poor protection too.

I'll probably look to pull of norton and put avg or something on it...
think I found the problem though...was in the dsik management and saw that for some reason it was reading my first sata as C and D (as it should), but the second hard drive that should be the mirror as G and H...I checked the intel matrix storage console and it's saying the raid driver is missing.
that makes sense then that it can't open any folders, because it's getting confused about the location.
I have a floppy drive in my second build I can plug in temporarily (no space in my case for it) and have the raid drivers on a floppy drive....but is there a way for me to put the raid drivers back in without having to do a clean install?

would I be able to do a windows repair installation and add in the raid driver? or is there some way within windows to add it back in?

A repair installation won't allow you to do this, at least I don't think it will. If you can download the drivers onto your desktop and run them then that should work. It doesn't matter how you get those drivers into Windows really but I am not sure if you're gonna be able to.

since I have a legit version of windows for this build, I decided to just to a clean install on the partition...make sure the RAID drivers got loaded, and then let the RAID rebuild itself for the whole drive.
Seems to have worked...am doing all my windows updates now. folders are opening again...but I have to install all my programs again.
and I think I'll have to call MS because of how many times I've reinstalled on this build. I've got acronis and imaged the drive, but it's basically useless since if I try to restore it, it's always lacking the RAID driver....oh well....that's what I get for experimenting with a RAID array when I really don't need it.
I'll post an update in a few days once I've had time to get it all back up and running 100%

most of the installs have been completed...running stable, no BSOD....no problem opening any folders

yeah, so the BSOD came back in similar situations....figured that all this started when I added the second hard drive as RAID...so I just deleted the raid, reinstalled everything, and am using the second hard drive as extra storage....stable as a rock no matter what I through at it....
long story short...at least based in my system, the RAID setup for the ASUS P5E-VM HDMI board was not reliable
