Windows XP Home Edition BSOD'd

I have an XP laptop and it BSOD'd last week and it keeps on going to BSOD each and every time it is started. Safe mode, Last known good config, start normal, nothing.

I read the BSOD and it complains about a damaged registry. Is there anyway to repair it?

No way to repair that I have ever heard of. You might try reinstalling Wondows over the existing version, but you will likely have to reinstall some of your primary programs again. This hive in the registry contains data regarding you licensing and preference options for pretty much every installed program and utility on your machine. Never seen one die before, though... maybe a bad sector on the hard drive? Dunno, just thinking out loud.

Yes, you are going to either have to do a repair or a install over your existing windows, you will HAVE to have your XP disk. And it is best if you can to doa clean install once you get back into windows and backup what you need.

Nope, tried that, still BSOD'd.

Well maybe the disk has or is failing, you can try to use chkdsk as shown here >>
Error Message When You Install Windows XP: "STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}"

Or you can try this >>>
1. Boot your system with the Windows XP/2000 Install CD, let the system start the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.
First, try to recover the Software Hive.
Type the following commands pressing Enter after each line.
md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Try to boot the system, if it doesn't start, get back into the Recovery Console and enter the following commands.
md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software

Try to boot the system.

If no luck, you may be stuck doing a clean install unless you can stick that disk in a different PC as a seperate drive and copy over the folders from a working XP install

Okay, so what I did is to install a second copy of windows on the same drive. I installed it on the folder "WINXP2."

Then I booted the XP's secondary OS, grabbed my files and then nuked the laptop.

Problem solved. :)

Clean install will make you feel better anyway I always say!
