removing icon shadows

i am trying to get rid of the shadows around my icons. suddenly i have shadows around my icons and a white square about two inches by 2 inches in the upper left corner of my desktop. i had the shadows gone before but i came home one day and there they were. i made sure the settings in the visual effects tab of performance>settings is ticked and that the web items on the right click of the desktop is unticked. i cannot get rid of these stupid shadows. thanks for any help.

I assume you are reffering to this check box? This is the box that needs to be checked to get rid of those white squares under the text of the icons.
