Maxtor is dead!

i had maxtor 60gb with my first pc. it went down the crapper after 4 years of usage and didn't fail on it's own. kinda user error but i don't want to talk about it ;)
i heard that many maxtors die frequently but as you see i was lucky enough...

Back to the problem at hand: Maxtor hd's fail very often and are unreliable. Some have had some good results, but the other half have had or are going to have a failure.

My suggestion; stay away from Maxtor and go with the brands that have been proven to work!

I agree, I am lucky never to have used maxtor! Thanks for the warning, now i will never use one. I have always been a WD guy anyway.

I dont know about the IBM stigma...
I have used IBMs both at home and in the work I do...

I have has much worse experience with Seagate and Maxtors than the IBMs

Although I have to say I would buy WD for not having to worry about anything...

I still have a 120GB IBM Deskstar which still works like a champ although by todays standard it is slow...

Deskstar aka deathstar.there slow yes and some doa.wd and seagte only for quality\speed.

Maxtor kinda sucks. I slapped one in an external usb casing and put up to store some backups. The owner of the website www.dragonsteelmods.com says that his maxtor COMBUSTED and incinerated his data. I hurriedly took off my backup and never used it again.


IBM "Deathstar" and Travelstar also sucks. I got a travel star in my lappy and it goes like slow and its 1A power drain kills my battery.

They'll probably give them to their employees and "dominoes with storage capabilities" all Maxtors are really useful for.. i put a 10month 160gb IDE in my pc and it wouldn't notice it despite i've put in old Quantum 2.34gb's and Seagate 2gb's... it's in my brother's pc now... i've always prefered Seagate unless of course i have the money to buy a raptor....

Wel let me tell you guys somthin.

I have owned roughly 4 maxtor drives in 15 years and well all off them last 4+ years and only gave upo when the electronics did. Electronics are not designed to last forever. so get over it.

Maxtor were a great brand. I never had an issue with em and most of the systems I installed maxtor drives in had little to no problems .
