Default Mushkin 996587 Memory Stability Testing and Review

Mushkin 996587 Memory Stability Testing and Review

Special Thanks to Cris Dodd at Mushkin Memory for providing this sample for testing!

Mushkin is a well know brand, and has been around for a very long time. Mushkin was established in 1994 by Bill Mushkin, purchased in 2000 by Ramtron International, and then finally in 2005 George Stathakis bought the company and became the new owner and president of the company. Soon after purchasing the company he sold the stock to employees and Mushkin is now a fully employee owned company

I can remember purchasing Mushkin RDRAM (Rambus DRAM), likely not even many of you have even seen or heard of that type of memory. That's just how long Mushkin has been providing quality memory to the masses.

Mushkin has been located in Denver Colorado for the past 14 years, but has just relocated its base to Inverness, the suburban tech center south of Denver in Englewood, Colorado.

They are well know for providing "Enhanced" memory, but they also manufacturer "Value" ram, as well as various server and laptop memory, and a small lineup of modular power supplies.

I requested this set in particular to help Gigabyte and Mushkin users as I had noticed several users seem to have issues with getting this set stable here lately.

I am providing several sets of timings and voltages at various speeds for Gigabyte P35 and P45 based boards at the end of this article.

Some images of the ram and packaging (Anyone care to donate a camera )

Mushkin uses a plastic blister packaging which protects the memory well. Various paper inserts with different Mushkin logo's are used depending on when the item was packaged and I believe what series the memory is a part of. Some European users may even get a very nice felt lined wooden box with the Mushkin Brand name and "<" logo burned into the box.

This set is from Mushkins HP Lineup, the HP lineup has Blue Frostbyte Heatsinks and is a part of Mushkin's mid-range overclocker's. The HP sets are a perfect balance between Mushkin's value memory (EM/ES) and high end (XP/Redline)

Specifications:

Mushkin HP2-6400 996587 (2x2GB)

Frequency: 800MHz Latency: 5-4-4-12 Parity: Unbuffered

Voltage: 1.8V Pins: 240
Density > > > Module: 256Mx64 Chip: 128Mx8

HP2-6400 DDR2 - Mushkin Enhanced

Tests were performed for each of the following settings in these boards: Two P35 boards and one P45 board. Each passed 12 hours or more of Memtest86+ 2.11, and each passed several hours of HCI Design’s Memtest running dual tests within windows while the system was in use. Along with that, each setting range was thoroughly put through various benchmark programs and tests, some of which will be graphed below. The graphed results were obtained in my main system, a GA-EP45-DS4P.

You may rest assured each of the tables of settings that are provided below will be fully stable for you on the memory side of things. If you have any issues, they would likely be due to other various non- memory related settings. The settings provided are for starting stability, and not fully tweaked. The reason I requested this memory was to help user s with stability issues, so please start there.

Benchmark results are provided at three common speed ranges: 800, 900, and 1000. For simplicity in helping others I will only provide the settings used in the benchmarks. The 900Mhz results are the clear winner here Only due to the fact that they are at 1:1 and the 1000Mhz are not. I found this set of ram to be very picky using 1:1 at 1000Mhz on a P45 board (P35 not so much) and I felt providing users with results of that or settings may cause more issues then need be. They will of course do 1000Mhz at 1:1 but you may spend a bit of time getting that stable. These results are solely based on the stable settings provided for initial stability, not tweaked at all. They can however be tweaked to better then I have posted here, and by no means is the settings provided all that this Mushkin Memory may do with proper time spent.

Testing Setup:

Gigabyte P35-DS4, P35-DQ6, EP45-DS4P
Intel Xeon E3110 3.0Ghz
Mushkin DDR2 PC2-6400 Ram Model 996587 (2x2GB)
Sapphire HD3870 Toxic 512MB GDDR4
750W PSU (Don't ask )
OS: Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

DO NOT use all of my voltage settings in the latter images, as many of them are motherboard or CPU specific and you would need to find your hardware’s own stable voltage ranges.

And, as always, if you do need help, I am here to offer it!

Default Re: Mushkin 996587 General Users Guide/Review

Highest memory speed reached at acceptable voltages and timings. I did not run any 500+ FSB for simplicity purposes because this article is to help others gain starting stability, above 500 FSB each user would need many specific settings tweaked which cannot be generalized.

1032Mhz tRD 9 (2.40B) *Click to enlarge*

For the price this memory is going for these speeds are very reasonable, and one should not expect much more without spending a little bit more cash. Still, this is very good for a 2x2GB set of 800Mhz memory. Of course, higher clocks are likely possible but you may spend days or even weeks fine tuning things until you get things going smoothly. One has to keep in min 2x2GB kits do clock lower then 2x1GB or even 4x1GB in many instances.

I spent several hours on several days trying to get this kit stable, as I see in many reviews it will do 1066+, but I just could not get it to run that. Of course anything past what the manufacturer states as spec is just a bonus and is never guaranteed.

Then again, I could have also just received a "Bum" Set, it happens sometimes?

I did not, nor do I expect 800Mhz memory to run stable over 1000Mhz within respectable voltage and timing ranges, that is what 1066Mhz memory is made for. If you EXPECT 1066+ you have to plan on purchasing that type of memory, or buy the VERY best a manufacturer offers, which this is not.

One also has to keep in mind that I was trying higher clocks with respectable Voltages (Within Warranty) and decent timings. I am sure I could have went over 1066 with looser timings and maybe more voltages.

All in all though even 1032 is good for 800Mhz memory, and for the reasons I asked for this kit I am happy with the results. I was able to run this kit stable at several ranges in several Gigabyte boards which was the main intention, and can now help others from first hand knowledge with this set.

Overall this is a very good set of memory for those who cannot afford a top end set of Mushkin yet still want some overclocking room. These are of course not the best Mushkin offers, but are far better then the Value Series memory and are available in a very respectable price range.

Disclaimer: This document is only intended to help anyone who is using Mushkin Memory to obtain a stable starting point for their memory in a Gigabyte board. This is not the usual ram overclocking and testing reviews you may find online by other professionals. Thank you for leaving only constructive comments, please.

Hi Lsdmeasap, I'm having a lot of problems with a kit of mushkin memory very similar to this and i was wondering how much of this thread is valid to my specific case.

My set is Mushkin 2x2 Gb ES2-6400 2.05V. 4-4-4-12 code 996640(they are almost identical to the pictures on your post), running on a Gigabyte ga-ep45-ds4(F9 Bios) with a c2d E8400(xigmatek hdt 1283), Ati HD radeon 4670, PSU Nox Urano 600w.

I've failed every memtest i've made, even at 800 mhz, 5-5-5-15 and 2.1v. with everything else in auto or default, and, of course, system hangs installing vista or xp.
I'm a little desperate, is anything I can do (settings) in order to achieve some stability or are they faulty and deserve RMA?

Thanks

ES Mushkin should have a silver heatsink but I see you are not in the US So they may not follow that rule, and they are the Suggested Non Overclocking sticks, sure they will a bit but just wanted to let you know they are the lower end of the sets by Mushkin

P45 is very tricky when it comes to memory and MCH Settings, and they often need to be adjusted for 2x2GB

Please give me your full settings you are trying that fail and I will advise back >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

Well, these sticks of mine comes with an electric blue heatsink very similar to the ones on your post, except for the clip between heatsinks. I know they are "value" RAM but the problem is they fail at the same rate at stock and overclocked (i've tried until 965 mhz).

On Sunday, I fixed my old computer (AMD athlon xp2500,very old..., psu died) and I was able to dowload memtest86+ 2.1 and others, and tried with different combinations, and evry one of them failed. Only recently I've noticed the fail is often on test 7, address 922MB to 1080 approx. up to 229 errors in 2 rounds ), so this is i Was wondering if one of the sticks is faulty.

But, just in case, here are my specs right now:
