Question i7 920 Running hot ???

Hello,

I have a i7 920 D0 running stock clocks.
When I load prime95 and test my system it runs a nice 69°C cpu temp in RealTemp on Idle it runs 43 - 45.
Room temp is 20 - 22°C
I have a Gigabyte X58-UD3R v1.0 (bios F6)
3x2Gb OCZ Titanium 1600mhz ram
2x Sapphire 4870 Toxic in Crossfire
In a Lian Li A71-B case with Zalman fans running 100%
My CPU cooler is a Cooler Master V10 mounted with ArticSilver5
Now I see guys running over 3.6Ghz not breaking sweat what am I doing wrong ?

What is wrong is a difficult question to answer. It can be many things or a combination of issues. For the sake of comparison, I'm running a CO stepped 920 @3.8GHz and my idle temps are 39c~42c. My max. temps. full load after 1/2 hour or more of Prime 95 is 66c~70C. I'm on air, using a TRUE cooler, I've posted a photo for you. My ambient room temp is a little higher than yours, averaging 24c.

Having said all that, the first thing I'd check for is air flow restrictions within your case. Does that HSF have plenty of cool air blowing on it? Does your cooling system provide for hot air to be quickly drawn off the HSF and exhausted out of the case? Is your HSF mounted correctly? Did you use too much/too little thermal paste? As you can see there are many avenues to explore here.

As for the V10 itself, frankly, other than looking really awesome, it hasn't gotten very good reviews in any of the articles I've read when compared with the Megahalem, TRUE, or IFX-14. However, I should think it would be performing better than what you're experiencing. Sorry, but I can't think of anything else to say here that might help....good luck.

Hi,

Its fixed now the gigabyte forum is more active so i posted there aswell.
I am now doing 4.0Ghz 1.2V at 75°C max temp + there are 2 VERRY hot ATI cards below the cpu heatsink the top one is about 70°C emitting a nice 55°C air thus I am glad with the result :-)

Its a good cooler makes allmost no noise and gets the job done I also tested at higher speeds witch also worked but I aint planning to be running my PC that hot :-)

Well first the Vcore was at 1.3V and made a lot more heat. what resulted in allmost 10°C less at 1.15-1.2V
And refitted the heatsink again and that got another 2-3°C
These temps are at idle and a bit more on load :)
