Looking good on tRD 8. I'm gonna run P95 all night tonight. Any thing else you guys need? Screenies, temp, volts...?

Thanks again.

Exclamation Re: Another Q9950 & UD3P Overclock

I've been tied up with testing memory module placement in different slots for the past couple of days. Seems that a new EP45-UD3P/Q9550/Dominator memory build has major issues with the memory.

Looks like you're making good progress. Not to rain on your parade, but your overnight test is 75% great & 25% UGGH; core #2 failed after 49 minutes with the dreaded rounding error.

Post your current settings and let's look at possibly increasing some voltages.

Suggestion: Include Memset info for both memory modules in your screen shots. Also include the cpu-z screen that shows cpu speeds (the initial screen displayed when you start cpu-z).

Check out this link for some good (if I say so myself) info on overclocking. This is the memory module placement thread where I cover a little bit of everything for an overclocking newbie.

No, it's not in the same league as LSDme's superb primer.

Default Re: Another Q9950 & UD3P Overclock

Are you still on the same speeds?, just changing memory timings?
You are testing with the case cover on yes?.
The cpu temps seem ok ,tho im not sure if that cpu voltage is enough for the speed.
You can see yorself that the voltage drops to 1.17 under load.
Certainly increased voltages give higher temperatures,as does increased speed but you need to have sufficient volts to get those electrons jumping at the higher temperatures too.

Id be a little concerned about ancillary temps.Gx cpu and system(assuming cpuid is accurate for you)
Its cool here today but ill just run prime for 30 min or so and see what i get on cpuid.

The above is a txt snapshot of my cpuid after 50 min or so.

As I said its a cool day room temp is 17-18C
It runs fine tho with ch on etc or if its a warm day say 23C 70F approx.(case cover on)

Why Im putting that up tho is mainly the sys temp and gpu temp.
My sys temp ive never seen above 42 in testing or gpu above 48 (unless gx testing).
Obviously my cpu temps are higher but I expect that at the fsb/volts Im putting on.

Thats why Im wondering why your sys gpu temps are so high/comparitively.

Are you doing some gx work while prime is running also?

Im primarily thinking of the mch temperature,if your gx card is happy at 80C nps,but is some of that extra heat leaking up to the northbridge(the big heatsink just below and to the right of your V8,near the memory) and the ram fans are they just blowing some hot air down around it too?

My system has cooled down now .The sys temp is reading 32C ,my nb temp sensor is reading 36.2C
The nb sensor is something I added myself.
I had to experiment to find the best location for it.
1.I have a memory/nb cooling fan which blows air at a 45degree angle over the memory and nb heatsink and is controlled by the sys_2 fan connector.
To cut a long story short when the fan is running at low speed the nb temp is 3-5 degrees higher than the system temp. When the fan is running at high speed the nb temp is approx 1 degree lower than the system temp.
IE nb cooling fan is good,no nb cooling fan not so good.
Of course then again your mbrd has the cool "blue gigabyte hats" over the heatsinks so maybe temperature distribution is different.

Jim here is the screen shots you asked for... Also I ran Memtest86 this morning before going to work and when I got home I had one error on test 6 pass 20 failed address 001648adf4 - 236.6mb good efffffff bad effff7ff error bits 00000800 count chan 1. If that means anything to you to me it's greek.

I had been reading SFChiefs problems with his memory and LSDme's post on gettiung the mother board going to overclocking. Good Stuff there.
Thanks for your knowledge and help.

Default Re: Another Q9950 & UD3P Overclock

Kick, I am still on the same speeds and was only changing the tRD and testing. Yes the case side panel is on, I have two inlet 120mm fans that run on low ( front 800 RPM, side 1000 RPM and one 120mm exhaust on medium speed (1300RPM). I was using the Corsair Domonator Airflow fan but it started making noise so I removed it. :-(

Also my Visiontek HD 4870 just runs that hot (75c -80c), normally on auto fan about 22%. Sometimes I run it in manual and then about 35% and it stays about 45c. But I forgot it was on manual last weekend when I played Far Cry 2. Boy it got so hot it CTD. So I set it on auto. I do try to change it to manual but I forgot on that overnight test.

Check out the info I posted for Jim and if you guys think I need more voltage let me know. Well any tweaks you guys want for that matter.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me and others on these boards.

It will be easier for us to check your settings if you use this format:

CPU Vcore….………..........................: [1.24375] <---1.25-1.36 (All up to your chip)
CPU PLL…………………....1.500V*.......: [Auto] << 1.5-1.58
ICH Core…………...……1.100V............: [1.10]<<< 1.1x-1.2

This way we don't have to scroll back & forth, especially when there are a bunch of comments to the right of the actual settings. I like to use BOLD for the settings, color is up to you.

You show:
tRas ...................12
tRRD...................4
etc.
Are these advanced timing settings on AUTO? The displayed value? Manually set?
To avoid confusion, please change the format to:
tRas ...................12...... [Auto]
tRRD...................4........ [4]
etc.
------> Accuracy is not important, it's everything!

Your screen shot is helpful. From here on out only 1 SPD window is required. It's possible (but unlikely) that the SPD values will differ between 2 identical memory modules. What will help is if you use Memsets ">>" button to show the memory timings for all the memory modules. In the other thread I referred to, we could see that tRD was set to 10 on the first module and 11 on the 2nd module. It turns out that the the first module was correctly set to 10, and the second module was accidently left on AUTO.

CPU Vcore should normally be set to th
e value shown in the bios (?.?????), unless you manually increase it. I can't determine the standard setting right now. If it's at the normal value now, increase it by 1 step (+0.00625).

Manually set:
tRAS to 15 (tweaking memory timings is done after we're stable)
CPU Termination to 1.20 volts
CPU PLL to: 1.50 volts
MCH Core to 1.26 volts

ICH Core is usually displayed as 1.5000 volts. Manually set this value to the "normal" value shown in the bios.

It looks like all the Reference voltages are set to AUTO. If so, good.

Your Memtest86+ results are close, but no cigar. Don't worry about the specific cryptic messages. You should let us know the PASS #, TEST #, and how many errors there were in each test.

Please clean up your bios template and let us know how the next test goes. Once we're absolutely sure of your test settings, we can take it to the next step.

You can always change the temperature alarm setting in the bios and/or EasyTune. Your current LOAD temps aren't bad and the temps will drop a bit after your cpu has gone through multiple heating/cooling cycles. Leaving your computer on 24/7 slows this process down.

Ah, much easier to read, too bad you didn't go with a multi-color post.
It's a shame that all the columns don't line up perfectly.

I see that you changed to 5-5-5-15 settings. Good. I was going to suggest this as a temporary change until we get tRD and tRFC finalized.

Once you're stable (I mean your cpu/memory settings), the 2.40B can probably be used up to 460 MHz cpu host frequency. After that the memory multiplier will probably need to change to 2.0B or 2.0D.

Loading OPTIMIZED bios defaults is REQUIRED before you tweak your bios settings.
This includes new system setups and immediately after flashing your bios!!!
