Default Bios F7 is better than F8h and F9d

I have f7 running stable at 4ghz. I upgraded to f9d with the same settings and it is stable for about 5 minutes then locks up the computer. I tried f8h and put in the same settings and the computer wont even boot just continually resets in 3 second intervals. Where are these bios made? Are they tested?

Default Re: Bios F7 is better than F8h and F9d

The BIOSes are made in Taiwan, and yes they are tested there, and again tested by you and I so that we may report any issues with various things. This is not an issue you are mentioning, it only says you have not tried properly with the new BIOSes.

MANY changes take place between versions, you can't expect, nor should you, that the same settings would work for different BIOSes as they are nothing alike.

With EACH new BIOS you must again tweak and find proper stable settings, you may get lucky sometimes and previous settings may work but not often. Just look at it like your first time with the board, because basically that is what it is really.

You may need more or even less of any given setting to find stability again from previous settings, do not think you can always use the same settings and be fine. The ONLY time you can do that with 100% certainty is with the same BIOS version.

And I must tell you, the new BIOS compared to the older ones like you are mentioning are MUCH better. No offense meant, but please stop making posts about this and tweak your board until it is stable. That's simply ALL you need to do, the BIOSes are fine I assure you.

Yes, maybe there is a glitch with this fan setting, or that temp monitor sometimes, but the things you are concerned with are indeed working fine you just have not taken the time to tweak things again.

I have a UD5 and UD4P and have used those BIOS you mention on UD5 without any issues, and I have even flashed them on my UD4P and again no issues.

Please tweak your settings, if you need help feel free to post about it all instead of making comments/threads such as this because it only makes it seem like you taken the time to properly setup things.

Trust me, and again no offense at all meant here I am only trying to get you pointed in the right direction

If I didnt know better I would think you wrote the bios yourself. You seem offended By my comment that the f7 has worked better then the others. My intent wasnt to piss anyone off. I have had more trouble with this computer then any other I have built and I have built many. My goal is to get 4ghz stable and you and others suggest first updating the bios. True im no expert as yourself and I am learning.
Question 1: Am I wrong to think that to get a high overclock stable it is mostly to do with upping the VCORE? Is this correct? If so and im already at a stable 4ghz using 1.3v why would I want to go with a new bios that forces me to go higher with my voltage causing me even more heat? Im not being smart or sarcastic I just want to know.
Question 2: If there are other settings I should tweak on the new bios then what should it be?
What would cause my computer to continually reset without even posting. using f8h?
for the record this was the only post I made regarding problems with certain bios's
I hope you can help me work these problems out because Im about ready to give up.

Can you give me a list of recomended settings to start off with for 4ghz using the lates BIOS? Also can you give me a list of the "key" settings that should be altered.
thanks

Sorry, that is why I said at the end I did not mean to offend you.

Na, I don't mind which BIOS you use at all. I just noticed you posting similar posts in a few threads so I just wanted to give ya a heads up is all.

I wasn't bothered a bit, really!

Hey, don't feel bad as I am no expert when it comes to X58 either, but I can help for sure! I just wanted to try and convince you of the things mentioned above, so you wouldn't be jumping ship on a better BIOS for no good reason is all.

1. No, Vcore is not everything, far from it actually when it comes to X58/i7. You may, or may not, need higher vcore. Could just be that you are not using the right combination of other voltages making you think you need more. We will see, but again no there is many things that need tweaked to properly find a good stable overclock at high speeds.

I know you just needed some advice, and I was only trying to stop you from hindering your own progress by giving up on the new BIOSes so easily without even trying properly.

2. On all BIOSes for a high overclock you must find your CPU's own prefernces. This mainly means what your CPU likes the difference between QPI/Vtt and Vdimm to be at any given freq of all items.

IOH also plays a key factor, and can PLL settings, but mainly your focus should be on finding proper QPI/Vtt and how it relates to your Vdimm choice. Some CPU's like this to be a closer value, some less, and some it does not matter at all.

Uncore Freq also plays a part in all of this of course, higher uncore speed would mean possibly higher Vdimm is needed, and sometimes a higher uncore than 2x ram multi can be key in stability as well.

3. If you can't post them something is not set high enough, or is set to high. NO BSOD? Just no post, triple reboot to defaults? If so then likely QPI/Vtt is not high enough, or could be too high (Users often are scared of this so I doubt it is too much) I'll give you some settings to try at the bottom of here, let me know how you get along. When/if things fail please post back the exact settings you tried and let me know how and when it fails.

4. Really? Well than I am very sorry again, if this is your only BIOS post. I do believe you!

I just must have confused your post here with several others I saw the past day or so that were very similar.

Again, I did not mean to sound upset of offended, I was only trying to convince you to "hold on a second" as I see that type of post often and people end up 4-5 BIOS's versions behind and wonder why they do not see improvements they like, that others are talking about.

Sorry, maybe I should have worded that better? I am a very nice guy, and did not mean to sound offended at all

Key settings to tinker with would be Vcore, QPI/Vtt, Vdimm (1.66-1.68 usually fine), IOH, and possibly the PLL's

These should get you going at 4Ghz >>>

BSOD Code meanings:

0X00000050 << Incorrect Memory Timing/Freq or Uncore Multi
0X00000124 << Incorrect QPI/Vtt Voltage (To Much/Not Enough)
0X00000101 << Not enough Vcore Voltage

Uncore & QPI Features:
QPI Link Speed .............................. x36
Uncore Frequency .......................... 16-18 (Always 2x memory Multi or 2x +1, 2x +2, ect) Sometimes 17 is better, sometimes 18 depends on your CPU as some do not like Odd values here and others may need to much tinkering with voltages to get 18 going for some users. I would try x17 then x18 before x16

Default Re: Bios F7 is better than F8h and F9d

You are correct, I didnt give the new bios much of a chance. I will give it another go.

"3. When I used f8h and my f7 settings all it would do was constantly reset before it even had time to post. Not just a few times then it used default settings, it did it at least 9 times. I finally tried to push the clear cmos button on the back and that finaaly stopped it.

Im going to try f9d and your settings and get back to you. I really appreciate the time you take to help us out around here.

Where do you live? I notice you post at odd hours like I do. Im at work right now on the night shift in saskatchewan.
Thanks

Hi Lsdmeasap

In sample config above you have Load Line Calibration = Disabled, is that you current recommendation?
