Default Re: EP45 UD3P I think I've fried it, but CPU & Ram?

Hi everyone!
I think (not wanting to tempt fate) all's ok! (minor whooop-yyyyyaaahhhaaaayyyy!)
have been running memtest86 on one stick, 5 passes with no errors.

Since it booted to memtest from floppy and has been running for hours, can I safely assume my CPU & memory (that stick at least) are ok?

I know memtest is hardly a stress-test for the CPU, but is it reasonable to assume that the fact it works at all, after the original electrical short (see first post), means it ain't broke?
...or can a processor be 'slightly' or subtly damaged, only showing errors when under stress?

Guess I'll only know that when I've stressed it, unless anyone else knows for sure?

Am going to memtest the other sticks overnight, then tomorrow install HD & WinXP, then I can run a proper stress test.

Are there any CPU stress testers that can be run from floppy/usb; then I could get to testing quicker than windows install route?

Stressing the CPU directly is a good idea. Use prime large FFT or a few runs of IBT. Usually though if a CPU is damaged it just won't work at all. There are I'm sure times when it can be just slightly damaged though, but rarely.

There's nothing that I know of that can be run without Windows to stress a CPU, but memtest does use the CPU a bit.

Thanks for that , Psycho101, I've downloaded prime95 previuosly, though never used it before, but haven't heard of IBT; google here I come (but after some dinner)...

Default Re: EP45 UD3P I think I've fried it, but CPU & Ram?

Hi again,
Well, things seem to be ok, and I can count myself lucky(ish).
I've done loads of stress testing, with everything hooked up on open bench, stock settings on CPU & RAM.
Ran:
Prime95;
6 hours, large ffts, 4 workers, no probs
5 hours, blend, 4 workers, no probs

OCCTv3.1.0;
2 passes, Linpack, Auto 1hour,

Intel Burn Test v2.3;
5 passes, standard stress level, threads= auto,
5 passes, high stress level, threads= auto, (but limited to 2047mb due to 32bit O/S)
as above, but with 4 threads,
as above, but with 16 threads,
then 19 runs, w. 16 threads,
then 22 runs, w. Auto threads, standard stress level.

All tests completed successfully with no errors.
(Open bench) Temps;
Idle = between 31c-39c across the 4 cores,
Under stress = 48c-57c

Windows install, drivers install/updates, windows updates all went smoothly & without a hitch, no blue-sceens or hangs at all, (as yet).

Can I safely assume now that the CPU & RAM are ok? ...and that despite the 2nd shop saying 5v line on 24 pin mobo connector was only delivering 4.2v., either their PSU tester was a bit out or uncalibrated, or the mobo doesn't mind the drop?
Everest Ultimate edition reports +5v standby as 5.08v; is this the same 5v line?

I'm really tempted to just stay with the one I've got, because I need to get this rig going (so I can use it for my work)...and yep, impatience plays a part.
RMA would take up so much more time, and the supplier say that they test all returns, and if found not to be faulty, will make a charge.

My thinking is, I complete the build with existing PSU, since all appears eerily stable, and then return later if things start going flaky; it's got 3yr guarantee, anyway?
Anyone got any comment re. my logic/foolhardiness?

Assuming nobody persuades me not to continue with existing PSU, and I go ahead with the build, I'd then like to do a modest O/C, and realise I've got to provide info if I want anyone to help.

Long ago I found a tweaktown page listing all the info items needed, and a bios template, but can't find it now, dammit (I think Lsdmeasap wrote it?) -can anyone provide me with a link to it?
