Default Re: GA-EP43-DS3L OC problem

I turned off C1E, EIST and Thermal Control in BIOS but the problem remains.

I Overclocked to FSB 333 and Multi 10 and after AC power disconnection is double posts. With Stock and 320 FSB and Multi 10 this does not happen.

Please help.

Double post is normal in that case since the chipsets needs to change some internal chipset timings (strap). The CPU has a 266 CPU and in order to run at 333 or more it needs to double post after AC power has been cut.
Does it load into windows normally and is it stable after double posting?

Thanking you for replying Nickel buddie.

Yes it loads in windows fine and it is stable. But i it normal for double post to happen when you OC beyond a point? In my case any OC beyond 20% it double posts.

I googled a lot and have found few posts but not many people face this problem.

It has to do with the "straps". The straps are 200, 266, 333 and 400, like the official FSBs of Intel CPUs. When you cut of power completely the strap is kind of reset to the CPUs default FSB and if you want to run the FSB at a run equal or greater than the next strap it will need to change straps.

If you use FSB 332 this should theoretically not happen, give it a try. I'm not 100% sure if it doesn't change the strap sometimes when it's close to the next strap.

Alternatively, try setting (G)MCH Frequency latch (another name for strap) to 266 (while using FSB 333) and try if the computer is stable

Thanks Nickel buddie. It worked. Sorry for the delayed response. YOU ARE A STAR!!!!

Here is what I did.

CPU FSB = 333
Multi = 10
MCH Latch = 266
Ram runing at 832 at 2.0v at 5-5-5-18 timing.

System is stable.

I tried running the system with 400X8 FSB and selected MCH Latch 333 with ram running at 800 MHz 1:1 but I got BSOD. When I select MCH latch 266, then RAM is OC too much (1000 Mhz) with the lowest level setting. I guess it depends on proccy default speed. If I increase CPU FSB keeping MCH latch at 266 , then the RAM also gets OC further. I dont think the memory modules I have will OC much. Hence, this MCH latch thing limits my OC. :(

However, I have a friend of mine using same Mobo and he is using
E8400 proccy. He was able to run his system stable at 333 MCH latch. I am unable to do so.

Will the double post damage any hardware component ( Hard drive)? Is it ok to use the system with double post? I mean is it safe?

Please advise. :)

A double post ONCE is normal when making certain changes, if it always happens then you still have some incorrect settings.

If you are using 333 FSB you should be able to use MCH Latch Auto or 333 and choose a memory Multi with a B on it. If you feel you cannot then you either have MCH Voltage incorrect or Static tRead set to low

You should be able to run FSB 333, MCH Latch Auto, and select 2.40B For 800Mhz memory

The system is stable with Memtest and OCCT. I changed the MCH latch to 333 amd TRFC to 50,52 and also tried changing Static Read to 7,8 for both channels, changed MCH voltage to 1.3. None worked as after AC power disconnection, when I booted, the system still double posts. The system does not double posts when restarted. This was my original problem.

When I set the latch to 266, the system does not double post even after AC power disconnection. While I was changing the setting and restarting PC after AC power disconnection, I got Checksum Error. I fixed that.

This MCH latch thing is limiting my OC as I am sure my RAM will not OC much. I wanted to get 400 FSB and wanted a 1:1 setting so that ram runs at 800 Mhz. That would be great.

Please advise.

Can you provide me with a link to your ram, or the model number? I think this 1.8V voltage may be the issue. Even though SPD shows 1.8V there may be EPP settings for 2.0-2.1V and your ram may allow 2.1v or even need it as well.

So before I advise, can you please provide that so I can be sure

I see many things wrong with the above settings, are those what you are using? Or what is failing, if so I can see why.

Ya, you should be able to run 399/401 FSB and use 2.00B or 2.00D memory Multi. I'll get you going, just need to be sure about your ram voltages first

Thank you very much for replying back sir. I am glad you are helping a noob like me.

My Memory module is Corsair TWIN 2X4096-6400C5DHX. Here is the link . Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L Memory Upgrades - Guaranteed Compatible Memory for your Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L from Corsair

Yes the setting I mentioned are the ones I am using and they seem to be stable. Ran 3 hours OCCT and 3 Memtest passes.

Waiting for your advice sir.

Thanks once again.
