Default Need help setting up bios

I was getting random bsod so I did a clean reinstall of Vista Ultimate. Still no joy. This is my system:

GA-P45T-DS3R Rev 1.0 - Bios F3
Intel Core2Quad 9400 2.66 MHz
Zalman cnps9700
XFX geforce 9800gt
2 x 2GB Crucial Ballistix ddr3 1333 (6-6-6-20 listed on sticks )
Antec True Power Trio 550 W
WD esata 1T

I have been reading various posts to try to set up my bios simply for stability at present, not even trying to oc

I am at the point of getting only one failure in memtest, but for some strange reason, I am trying for no errors.

Here in brief is my bios

M I T
Robust - Auto
CPU clock ratio - 7.0
Fine CPU clock - 0
CPU Frequency - 2.33 GHz ( 7 x 333 )

Clock Chip Control
No change from default

Advanced Clock Control
CPU Clock Drive 800 mV
PCI Express 900 mV
CPU Clock Skew 0ps
MCH Clock Skew 0ps

DRAM Performance

Performance - Standard
(G)MCH Freq Latch - 333 MHz
Syst Mem Mult - 4.00B
Mem Freq - 1333 [1333]
DRAM Timing - Manual

Std Timing Control

CAS Latch - 9 [9]
tRCD - 9 [9]
tRP - 9 [9]
tRAS - 9 [9]

Adv Timing Control

tRDD - 4 [Auto]
tWTR - 5 [Auto]
tWR - 10 [Auto]
tRFC - 74 [Auto]
tRTP - 5 [Auto]
Cmd - 0 [Auto]

everything else is at default or I can get specific info if needed.

So before I even try to oc I need to get this puppy to run stable and close to spec

Are there any suggestions on what my next step should be?

Thanks,

Dan

I would suggest you reset the comos then load optimized defaults. After loading optimized defaults you should save and exit, then enter the BIOS again. Then set your drives to either IDE, ACHI or Raid and any other changes you want to make. Reboot into Vista. One error in memtest is probably nothing to worry about at this point. But thats jut my opin.

Default Re: Need help setting up bios

Thanks for the suggestion.

I actually reloaded the fail safe bios. When I did that the DRAM Performance Enhance defaulted to Turbo and when I ran memtest the screen turned red with continuous errors, failing in test 5.

I then went back into the bios and the only changes I made were to lower the CPU ratio from 8x to 7x, lowered Performance enhance from turbo to standard, kept (G)MCH at 333 MHz with the system memory multiplier at 4.00B, (giving the memory frequency 1333 MHz), DRAM timing to manual and left Cas 9 [Auto], tRCD 9 [Auto], tRP 9 [Auto], tRAS 9 [Auto], and left all the voltages at the defaults from fail safe. Now when I run memtest I get no errors ( with only one pass so far ) BUT with the 7 x multiplier I'm only getting 2.33 GHz from my 2.66 GHz CPU ( Q9400 )

I would sure like to at least get the "advertised" speed of 2.66 GHZ.

Any ideas on what I should do next??

D

Can you post your current bios settings? There is a template somewhere on here just search for your motherboard specs and template...

I don't know much about the Q9400 stock settings so please fill out this template with optimized defaults loaded. Also If your running sata drives and want to run them in AHCI you would have had to select AHCI in the bios when installing the OS. Not that running in IDE mode is bad.

Also include more detailed information on your memory such as stock timings and voltage.

I will show the differences in my Optimized Settings in Red

The Crucial Ballistix DDR3 are a 4 GB Kit each 2 GB DDR3 PC3-10600 CL6, 1.8V and each is marked 6-6-6-20 1.8V

The only cmos settings so far that is stable is the one I show in the photos I took of the cmos. That is, I've been running two days ( LOL ) without a bsod

From my brief viewing of your template I see there are alot of settings on auto. Also, note that your RAM needs 1.8V to be able to perform at 1333 with 6-6-6-20, you have it on auto which will default to 1.5V. Below I've included an amended template for you to try. Don't worry just yet if it fails, it can be tweaked.

I've used your RAM's VDIMM requirement. Also note MCH core is increased. 1.10V MCH is seldom enough. Your Vcore is fine on auto if not over clocking, but setting CPU term and PLL to manual defaults is good practice.

Also note they you need to set RAM timings yourself. The primary timings are to your RAM's specs, but I've suggested looser sub-timings and a tRead of 8 for now as I guarantee they're a stable selection.
