Wrong BIOS setting.

Hi,

I noticed that the BIOS was setup as IDE for SATA hard drives, I have now changed the setting to AHCI, Now Device Manager is displaying these messages see below. Do I need to install SATA drivers now? Picture when I click on the device that has a yellow flag next to it its saying that it cannot be started.

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

I also would like to know which ports (Color and #) you have your SATA Disks/Devices connected to

IDE is normal for a NON AHCI or RAID Setup, that is just how they label it. To use AHCI you need to install the driver Before the OS. I am surprised you even got into the system after making this change.

The setting you have highlighted and marked Enabled/IDE above is for the Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller ports (Purple) and you should be using the Intel Controller (Yellow) so that is why I need all of the above info before advising you of what to do

Motherboard = GA965P DQ6 Model, Revision 1
BIOS Version = F11


The SATA devices are connected to the yellow pors on the motherboard.

Since your disks are connected to the Intel (Yellow) Ports, you can disable the settings you have asked about. Those are for the Gigabyte/J.Micron controller (Purple Ports) and IDE Devices that use the old IDE ribbon cable, if you do not use the purple ports or old IDE Devices then all you need to do is set those to disabled

The top two entries are for the Intel controller and if you are not using AHCI or RAID you have them set correctly (IDE/PATA Mode). You can however enable Native Mode in the second setting if you like.

If you want to use AHCI you would need to reinstall your OS using the AHCI Drivers, it can be done in other ways but not as easy as a clean install.

You cannot however just change those settings to AHCI your system will not boot, just a heads up

Am I correct in thinking that I can disable the setting that I highlighted in my first post back to IDE? instead of ACHI?

Ok so if I enable Native Mode would this make the SATA devices recognized as sata and instead of ide?

IDE will make your SATA devices appear as IDE devices. It is intended for legacy OS support (such as Windows XP if you can't find SATA drivers for it). Native mode will enhance performance of SATA drives if i remember right.

However, switching fully to AHCI from IDE requires a reinstall of Windows.

Ok so if I set it to Native Mode would the BIOS then register the drivers as SATA instead of ide and post as SATA instead of IDE?


When changed the BIOS setting to AHCI the drives still showed as IDE at post and within the BIOS.

When turning Native Mode on the SATA drives will register as SATA. But you will then have to reinstall Windows.

Yeah, a repair install should be enough. However, if the system runs fine as it is, then there is no reason to reinstall.
