I'm about to run two 4850's my self. Just waiting on the second card now.
I've had the first since Christmas, and from my experience even a single one likes clock speeds of 3.2GHz-3.4GHz to perform close to optimal. Going from 2.33GHz to 3.4GHz on my Q8200 litterally doubled my minimum FPS in Far Cry 2, made my average FPS a solid 65-70 and the max went sky high. I saw similar results in almost all of my other games (CoD4, CoD5, Burnout Paradise, original Far Cry, Crysis Warhead, Company of Heroes, Fifa 09, Half Life 2, Street Fighter 4 and many others). After 3.4GHz on my current E7400, gains tend to tail off. I'm almost certain that the extra 500MHz I have now I'm at 3.9GHz will benefit me more in Crossfire than a single card config. A 4GHz CPU, be it Quad (Q9550) or Dual Core (E8400) will be more than enough to allow those two 4850's to stretch their legs. As for going higher than 3.9GHz-4GHz, you'd have to do some testing while you have the machine (if you're building it for him). Balance speed with safe voltages (1.3625V is a good limit to use up to initially with a max of 1.4 CPU Term and a 1.57V-1.61V PLL voltage) and good temperatures (under 70c, preferably 65c or under). People here will be happy to help with the setup and configuration once you get the parts.

I have Gskill ram See sig and it runs cooler @ 2.1v then my corsair does @ 1.8v

Psycho101, just so you know the EP45-DS4P has direct input voltages, such as 1.22 for MCH and 1.92 for dram, ect. There is no +0.x voltages on the DS4P
Not sure if you knew that or meant some other voltages, so just thought I would drop that info on ya.

I apreciate the info. I thought it was like most X48's such as NimrodAUS's board where you just had a +0.xx setting. Thanks for clarification.
Have you had any success with quads on the DS4P? I seem to remember you had a Xeon dual core, but don't know if you had a quad going on a P45 too. I can't find anything in thread search. It has 6 phases, like the UD3 range, so it should be passable for quad clocking. If only the UD3P had those hard wired power reset and CMOS clear buttons. They'd be handy to have.

Ya, I believe that is only X48 and P35, I do think all P45's and above have direct input increments and you can manually input a Vcore and not have to scroll thru the menu to get where you want. I have not looked at all P45 BIOS, but I do know the DS4P and DQ6 have the values as mentioned.
Sorry, I have never used quads on P45's, only Duals (8400 and E3110) Yes those buttons are nice in DS4P, also come in X58 boards from DS4P onwards too. I love my clear CMOS button, Of course I used to just hookup my case reset switch and do the same, but it is nice having the buttons already made into the board. Now if we could only get them to add a set of voltage read points in a nice little confined area that would be great!
