i just received my SSD today (after 1 month of waiting), i eagerly installed it. Acronis run fine wth SSD on USB. I could put the drive inside my X40. The boot was good and fast... and then, i ran some benchmark. CrystalDiskMark first, 4K random, fine, got 18 MB in read and 9 MB in write, pretty impressive. Then i ran the Sequential Test. The 5 read test went fine, but it blue screen before finishing the write test. (actually, everything hang, the HD light didn't move and 2 min after, with comp unresponding the blue screen). I restarted, run crystalmark same. I could always run the 4K random, but the other two makes it reboot. I took of the ssd and put it back again. Same. Tried to run ACCO - bluescreen very fast. Tried to run IOmeter - same (before the test, actually when it just recollect some free space on the disk on which performing the test). MMhhh. I restarted, and run the computer without bench. Everything went fine... until out of curiosity, i copied a movie through wifi on the SSD (3MB/seconds, not so fast), and it blue screen again. So read seems fine, but heavy write (sequential) makes it blue screen. Now, there are two explaination: 1) Power consumption, as the comp gives 3V while the SSD is normally rated for 5V. 2) the PATA to SATA converter which cannot cope with the bandwidht. I think 1) is the problem. Do you have any advise?? Anyone can run the disk on an X40?.. |

some update: i tried in udma mode 0 (16MB/sec)- the slowest possible which is not the painful PIO.... could get the X40 longer stable...
but ATTO produced a blue screen in the middle of the process. Did a lot of test with the drive plugged to the USB cable: no problem at all... It seems pretty bad at this point, i dont see why changing the drive would give me a working drive since this one seems to be working, just not with my computer... again, i guess it is the 3V vs 5V problem... well another explanation may be because the drive is not well attached to the ide connector - it doesnot seem very tight, but once i really pushed it well... and it wasnot working either... there is a jumper at the back of the drive, what happens if i change it? |

thx! good to know i am not alone and the problem is looked at.
The other pearson has the problem on an X40 or on another laptop? I can try to buy a 2.5->3.5" converter to try to boot from one of my desktop and see whether the problem is with the laptop or if it is when it is the main drive. However, the power consumption issue seems to be the most likely one (SSD consume more when they do sequential write, which is exactly when it fails). Hope to hear some good news soon. Can you tell me about the jumper on the back of the drive? |

I am trying to install 128 GB RCP-IV-P1828-C into X40.
I have successfully cloned old 40GB disk to new 128GB SSD. However when I place a new disk into X40 then it is not recognized. Even it is not shown in the BIOS as boot device. I have updated X40 to the recent bios firmware 2.08 and recent embedded controller 1.62 and did not help. Should I set different position of the dip-switch to make the disk as master? Are there any technical reference of the dip-switch position meanings. Do you have any recommendation what should I do to enable the drive for X40. Thank you. |

Hi msun.
Your problem is that the SSD is probably not firmly connected to the IDE connector. Here is my experience: I tried to put the HD tray (the slim metalic part i took of from my previous HD) around the SSD, and could never push the SSD deep enough to the connector. Then i took of the tray, i try to put the SSD alone (only screwed with 2 screws on the plastic "HD door"). Sometimes, it wasnt recognized, but i could push it well and screw such that it was safely recognized all the time. You should be able to do the same. You have to be patient, it will get recognized by the bios when it will be well connected. After my problem, i though it may be due to the connector not being well fixed, so i did something you shall NOT do: i push the SSD withtout screwing it to the black "HD door". I push it deeply in the connector. the problem is that you will have a hard time taking it off (you need to open the machine - do not do it unless forced). Obviously, my problems staied the same... edit : i d like you to succeed such that i can know whether all X40 are uncompatible with the SSD or whether only some SSD are affected. 2 people posted in another thread that they got their SSD working in their X41T... (dont know when it was done, neither which size he has). when you succeed, thanks to post here and tell me if you can run all the test of crystal diskmark... it is a really easy to use benchmark tool you canfind from free everywhere (use google) Last edited by bgxmmx; 10-08-2009 at 05:51 AM. |

I have tried your suggestion. Even the hardest one with no metallic disk holder and no screws. But no luck. Well It came to my attention the case design around the connector. Original Hitachi disk uses different design as RunCore one. And maybe this might be a problem for X40 and X41. Maybe X40 connector is too big and is stuck by the RunCore case around the HDD connector. See the picture. Hitachi HDD case only have two small embossements at the connector edges. On the other hand RunCore connector is completely covered with the HDD case over its three edges. I could see that original HDD goes a little bit deeper (mm or two) into the X40 hole as RunCore one but to see what actually happens around the connector X40 must be opened which is beyond my skill. The design team is looking into this issue we have stopped shipping this type of SSD until we figure it out. If this goes as fast as it did for the MBA problem we had then we are looking at around 15 days. I suggest you all send the drives back to the vendor and wait for a replacement.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that encountered this problem! I used a 32GB: RCP-IV-P2532-C ide disk on my Toshiba M200 tablet laptop. I am pretty sure that this has nothing to do with a bad connection of the disk. BSOD happens the every time I try to install my antivirus program for example. Other times it seems to happen randomly. I wrote to runcore support som days ago. They have not replied though, but I have heard that their support really sucks. I returned my disk. But I ordered it in germany so it cost me 60 Euros in shipping :-) Regards Ronni |
