If I want to play a game at 1024x768, do I need to set both my desktop resolution and the game both at that setting, or can I just leave my desktop at 800x600, and then select 1024x768 in the game and get the same results? Please take it easy on me with the replies, I am a new gamer, and I am well aware to the experienced gamers this is a ridiculous question. Thanks

yeah you can set the game at 1024x768 and leave the desktop at 800x600

one question tho, why are you running an 800x600 desktop resolution?

As metallicat666 said, changing a game's resolution will have no effect on your desktop resolution.

Because I have a 15" monitor, and 1024 just looks tiny on it. Would you suggest something better? I just got an Asus 9600XT, and my monitor is doing it no justice. Hopefully I can get a 19" soon. 800x600 just looks the best on it. Actually, 800 and 1024 are the only ones that are even viewable. 1152, 1280 etc., distort the screen so they dont work. Thanks for the replies though.

if 1024x768 is too small when on the desktop it may result in the in game text being too small aswell

Technically, it should make for a crisper image, right? More detail also?
