you have to select 1.66 in the bios,dont worry it actually uses 1.64 volts but you have to select 1.66 as it doesnt have the option for 1.65 trust me ive been running my ram faultlessly on 1.66,and you need that voltage to make it stable

Are you running 6 or 12GB? Why is it that if one selects 1.66 it uses 1.64? My 6GB is perfectly stable with XMS profile which uses 1.65.

It's definitely possible to get 12GB of Dominator running on your board. Some guys over at XS have had no issues. Similarly, a few people I know personally have both that RAM and also the cheaper XMS3 running in a 12GB config.

One thing I can say for certain is that the extra RAM you bought wasn't faulty.

The XMS profile may show it selecting 1.65V and it does, but if you look in the PC health section of your BIOS you may see that actual RAM voltage is a touch lower. This is perfectly normal, and as with CPU voltage is known as Vdrop. RAM voltage can also get slightly lower if it's being used heavily at load. This is called VDroop.

Your sticks will be perfectly fine with up to 1.7V as long as you have all other voltages set accordingly. 12Gb can take a while to get stable and may need adjustments to both primary and advanced timings, as well as voltages (QPI, DRAM, even Vcore). If over clocking, then different RAM straps, combined with different BCLK and multi settings to keep the CPU at the same speed may also help stabilize, especially if over clocking the CPU.

Generally 6G is about the sweet spot for RAM. Unless you do heavy video editing, photoshop with billboard sized posters, do really serious work on RAW audio etc, 12GB is over kill for most. The only use I personally could find for that much RAM is to set up a RAM drive and install a couple of programs, the internet cach and a small swap file to it. Have the RAM drive program save the image of the RAM drive and load it at each boot and you have a super fast section of storage.

Thanks, that's good to know. While I had the full 12GB I did some checking and it seemed the transcoding I was doing was cpu bound, so for now I'm going to stick with just 6GB.
