i wouldnt trust it if it doesnt use a backplate to support it,have you looked at any other coolers???
I am looking for an opinion on installing the Zalman cooler in place of the original from Intel.
The socket 1156 adapter kit consists of a plastic frame that bolts to the motherboard
with four plastic inserts, and bolts, but no backing plate.
This cooler weighs in at over 900 grams or nearly two pounds. Considering that the MB will be positioned vertically in the case, I'd like to know if this would place excessive strain on the motherboard leading to early failure.
Thaks for any input on this.

You should be able to buy a backplate for that cooler, at least I think you can.
The366 models have a built in backplate of sorts, do the 1156 boards not? Not saying this would be all you need, but just wondering because if they did have this you might be ok at least until you could get a backplate.
What you could do if you can't find a zalman one is buy a watercooling backplate, they are pretty much universal and you would just put it on and put your screws through the holes and all would be fine.
Something like this
Thermalright Socket 1156 Bolt-Thru-Kit
Thermalright LGA1156 Bolt-Thru-Kit for AXP-140 Bolt-thru Board Mounting kit Products Model: BTK-1156-AXP-140 [BTK-1156-AXP-140] : Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come
No Drilling needed
1156/1366 Backing plate for NT-01E/NT-06E Heatsinks Products Model: 1156/1366-BP [1156/1366-BP] : Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come
A few of those you would need to drill out the screw threads, but that is easy as I have done it a few times with these to use my own screws

I purchased the 1156 adapter kit, but it is a very un-Zalman like flimzy contraption.
The motherboard has a large copper plate under the CPU, but it does not extend to the mounting holes. Your suggestion of using an adapter from some other manufacturer makes sense. Good thinking. I like the Zalman, because it is a low profile all copper job with excellent cooling abilities. Other coolers are rather tall, putting even more torque on the motherboard.
You should get one of the above linked backplates then, they are not flimsy at all.
Thanks, ya I thought they had a smaller plate already on the board, thanks for verifying that for me.
Ya one of the above would work fine, the cooler just bolts through the board correct? If so then any of those above would be fine.
