If AMD wants to be able to compete with Intel Their new CPUs will habe to be priced accordingly.

That card should work in this system, are you sure it's not faulty? I'd test it on another PC to be sure, PCIE 2.0 is backwards compatible, so it should work on your current board.

Radeon HD 5770 is known to have compatibility issues with older motherboards. I've dealt with it first hand. HD 5770 won't POST in a Abit KN8 SLI.
