Problem with my new radeon 7750

Hi everyone,

I just bought a gigabyte radeon HD 7750 from newegg and it arrived 2 days ago (monday). I installed the card to replace my nvidia 7600 GS and everything worked great. Yesterday while I was playing world of warcraft my screen suddenly turned black and my keyboard and mouse are not responding. I hard booted the computer, nothing happened, black screen, no video signal, hard drive didn't even boot. I tried booting again 2 more times and still nothing. I then proceeded to unplugged the new radeon card and plugged it back in and the computer started again perfectly. Long story short, this happened 2 more times yesterday.

This morning the same thing happened only this time I could not started the computer at all with the radeon card installed. As I'm writing this post I had to install my old nvidia 7600GS card.

This is my system spec:

Dell studio 540
Q8200 Intel Core2 Quad 2.3 GHz
6 GB DDR2 RAM
Generic 350W PSU

I just contacted newegg to get a replacement card but now I'm wondering if my motherboard is incompatible with this card. Has anyone here with an older motherboard have the same kind of problem? Also I think I only have a PCIe 2.0 slot instead of 3.0 (does this make any sense?) but I asked a couple of people and they said this should not be a problem. Is this true?

Any reply/advice on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I see on GB site PSU need to be 400W so that may be a concern.
Could be compatibiliy issue, but only new boards with 22nm CPUs support PCIe 2.0.

If PSU was the problem shouldn't it wouldn't boot at all when the first time I started it? I also checked with a few of my friends who is more knowledgable on this technical stuff and they said my PSU should be fine because the power requirement for this card is so low. Should I get a new PSU too when the replacement card arrives?

If you are waiting for the replacement don't rush to get better PSU unless you can borrow one just in case the replacement doesn't work also.

I thought video card used to have a AMP raiting? I know power supplys say how much amps they put out on each rail but I thought video card required so may amps for single use or for crossfire or SLI.

Yes AMD says 500w - 600 wats or better. They do not mention how many amps the psu needs to supply.

500 or 600W for the radeon 7750?? I was recommended this card because one of the selling point is that you don't need a high capacity power supply to run this. Is this true? If it is I'm just going to try and get a refund on this instead of a replacement.

500W (or greater) power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended
600W power supply (or greater) with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended for AMD CrossFire™ technology.

Thats what AMD says.

Also keep in mind Dell uses proprietary power supplies, that only work on their systems due to the pinouts, so you will need to buy a Dell PSU if you do intend to upgrade the PSU.

500W PSU is suggested for this card, directly from the AMD Site, as linked above, so you may need a larger PSU.

I'd go ahead and try out the new card first before you decide to look into Dell power supplies (Ebay, or Dell direct)

Also be sure you are using the latest BIOS, you can download that here, to check your current version look in Mainboard tab of CPU-z

Im no expert, but I might be able to offer some advice..

first off I believe the newer Dells are slightly more friendly to some upgrades like PSU (but you must consider the actual dimensions of the PSU itself)

imo I sorta agree that its possible for a known brand to under-rate the power of a PSU, But a few things to consider is 1) time/age of PSU (they lose power capabilitys over time 2) heat can effect performance (read rated power output 3) the PSU must be able to provide the proper juice amt on the specific connection ie. some cards may need 30 amps at startup, but some PSU's may only provide 25

The most important consideration is size (size both wideth & length of PSU) and amps

Im guessing a figure like 5.9"(W) x 3.4"(H) x 5.5"(L) but please dont hold me to it period (depends on specific case I believe OR think you cant go slightly longer (gets more fun to install) if your case size is what I suspect maybe go 5.9" x 3.4" x 6.3"

imo Id just add some Watts to what you care to account for ie. Manuf says 400 (add 50) plan to run/use PSU for a few yrs (add another 50)

PCI Express is designed to be backwards compatible (I dont believe its an issue)

p.s. I would consider posting back w more info, if you would like help choosing a specific PSU. Im personally not going to recommend thoroughly cleaning your computer (dust adds heat) mainly because I suspect your at the limit of the PSU (increased wear n tear) Summer is commin & shutdowns cant be good!

A web search using: dell compatible power supply will help you locate a more powerful psu for your system.
As previously stated, you will need to ensure that a new power supply will physically fit in your system.
A quick Newegg search in their power supply supply section only found 3 power supplies and all were 400 watts or less.

One option that might work is Dell Upgrade Power Supplies from PC Power & Cooling.
Download the http://www.pcpower.com/downloads/S50D_3858.pdf mechanical diagram for the physical dimensions.

If you buy a new psu from Dell, the purchase price will probably be much higher than a quality aftermarket unit, possibly twice the price or higher.
Don't buy a refurbished power supply, as the warranty period will be much lower than the standard 5 year warranty.
A good quality power supply will probably cost at least $75 - $100.
Don't be tempted by lower cost generic power supplies.
Using a cheap power supply is asking for trouble.
