AMD OverDrive is indeed overclocking software, it does not show all the settings but does show most of the settings in BIOS M.I.T section.

instead DDR-1866 you can try to verclock the host clock, keep CPU close to default frequency and see how far can you push the memory with 8-8-8-24 timings, and the with 9-9-9-27 timings.

Overclocking the host and the NB frequency increase memory performance even if you use the same DDR rate. e.g. running DDR-1600 with host clock 249MHz and memory multplier 6.66 will yield better memory performance than 200MHz host clock and 8/00 mltiplier.

BTW what is your board revision? Please fill your forum signature with your system specs.
There is a new BIOS dated 2012/03/23 with update CPU AGESA 1.2.0.2, long shot but it may make a difference.
Remember always to update BIOS at stock settings.

I'll give that thought a try.

I did ask you about how to add a signature, I have looked through all the options in "my profile" but could not see how?

and my revision number is 1.2, I installed the latest BIOS update from Gigabyte about 3 weeks ago (GA-990FX-UD3 FCi)

Just Checked out @BIOS in Gigabyte program and the latest version it has is 'FB', nothing about FCj.

and as you can see I've added a signature file now (did not have that option before in settings?)

FC is still beta(public) so probably the reason @BIOS doesn't see it.
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 1.2)
In general we recommend not to use @BIOS, just download the BIOS, extract the BIOS file to a USB flash-drive and update the BIOS within the BIOS' Q-Flash utility, again, with default (optimized) settings loaded.

The memory should be capable for DDR-1660 with 8-8-8-24 timings, and with some luck maybe DDR-1700 or a bit more.

Just got the new BIOS from Gigabyte but cannot use it (seems to be wrong size?) got this message when I tried to flash

Can not load ROM image from BIN file, maybe BIN file size not match.

I downloaded it a couple of times but each time the same thing happens?
I am going to try another one of your suggestions (verclock the host clock), I'll get back to you

The file is a self extracting archive, run it and copy the file 99FXU312.FCj to a usb flash-drive.

Try firsk, host clock 208MHz, CPU Ration 17.5, and you may need a click or two more CPU NB Vid Control.
If that work try 212MHz host and CPU Ratio 17.

EDIT: also keep HT Link frequency close to 2000.
What are the options (steps/range) for CPU NorthBridge Freq.?

EDIT2: NB Voltage Control may need a bit more votage as well.

    Just a note.
1.1866 supported with 1 DPC (DIMM per Channel) in single memory slot motherboard designs.

    Thanks artdrivers.

I wonder if than means the 9.33 multiplier is only supported when only one DIMM per channel is installed.
Worth to try with memoty multi 8.00, host clock 233MHz, CPU Ratio 15.5 and NB Voltage and CPU NB VID control as needed.
