gigabyte z77x-d3h wont post reliably, posts, but after turning off and on, wont post.

Hello,
I built my system together yesterday, in a test setup config , i5 3570k, cooler master 212 evo, 8gb ram. The system posts fine and i can get into the bios and look at everything. But when the system is powered down then power up again, it does NOT post. The only way to make it post again i have found is to just leave the system off for a bit. I have no idea why this is happening, it could be something to do with the small connectors in the mohterboard, im using my cases connectors and cases buttons to turn it on and off and sometimes when i press the power off button it the system just ignores it, and it takes a couple attempts.


If you need more information ask away, any advice would be appreiciated.


P.S i can post with and without graphics card in this manner so it cant be that, the processor is at an okay tempearture in the bios (30c) , the ram is shown in there, everything is pretty much fine, except it just wont post more than once.


Another concern i had was that the power supply makes an odd high pitch noise when the system is powered down but the power supply is still on , could this indicate a faulty power supply? But how else can i know if its the power supply doing this because everything seems to work fine.

If you hit the power button and it does nothing, could be wiring as you suggested but might be psu. Look over your wiring carefully and make sure the front panel connectors on the motherboard are fully seated.
Once you are satisfied the wiring is good then all I can suggest is try another psu, maybe borrow one if you can?

The only time the power button is unresponsive is after ive turned the system on (via same button), my wiring is fine i think, everything is definitely working, since i can get a post if i leave the power supply off for a few mins then try again. Im starting to think it could be the power supply as well, but that doesnt explain why i could leave the pc on in bios for ages and the issues with power on/off.

You might have a defective on/off power switch.
Unplug the on/off wire connector and carefully use the tip of a screwdriver to momentarily connect the two exposed on/off pins on the motherboard header to turn your system on and to turn the system off. If there are no issues when using the screwdriver, the on/off switch is probably defective.

i was using a screwdriver with the pins on the motherboard, and had the same issue, wherein it would start okay, but shutting off would take several attempts, so its not the cases power button or anything.

Currently experimenting with how long i have to leave it off with psu on for the system to be able to post. Another thing is, the power button/pins are only unresponsive when the motherboard has failed the post and just runs with the cpu fan running in bursts, as if it was trying to reboot itself over and over or something. When i try to turn off the system after the successful posts i have no issue, it turns off straight away.

It sounds like your system is in a boot loop when it fails to post successfully.
Depending on a bios setting in the Power Management panel, you might need to keep the on/off switch depressed for 4 seconds or a bit longer to power off your system.
What is the brand and model number of your psu? How old is it?
Can you borrow another psu to test with?

okay so after having a couple goes it is clear, that the system WILL post again, if left off for around 6-7 minutes. Any idea why this is happening?

Have you tried loading Optimized Bios defaults?
Have you changed any bios settings?
Try booting with only one memory module installed and see if the behavior is different.

psu is brand new corsair tx550m , all this stuff is brand new, started building yesterday, ill have a look in the bios about the instant off stuff, but im pretty sure i have it set to instant off.
