04 = South Bridge initialization before microcode loading - from the EVGA Z77 FTW motherboard user manual in the AMI Post Codes section (page 28)
    http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/...51-IB-E699.pdf

I don't know if all Z77 motherboards share all of the same debug codes.

Don't know if this has any thing to do with the code your getting, but while poking around in the bios the other day, I noticed under Bios Features and OS Type it has three Settings. There are: Other OS Windows 8 and Windows 8 WHQL. You might look at it and see whats selected. The bios may auto slect this settings for all I know. Just a thought...

I found an ASRock motherboard with identical debug codes.
It looks like the 04 code might be an informational status code, not an error code.

Are you having any particular problems?

Yep, A0 is normal, or 03 when resuming from sleep, never saw it stop on 04 before, but I'm running Win 7. .
Out of curiosity, do you have Fast Boot enabled in the bios?

I don't have Fast Boot enabled (does it make a big difference ?) but still the boot speed really improved with Windows 8.

No, I was just wondering what the final code was with Fast Boot enabled.
