    Default Devils Canyon Z87 support?

Looking at a number of different motherboard manufacturers including Gigabyte they all seem to have bios updates to cater for up coming New Haswell CPU,but from everything i have read in order to use Devils Canyon you need Z97 motherboard, can anyone shed some light on this?

That would not be Intel's standard operating procedure to release a "new' proc and NOT req a new chipset would it?

From what I've read the refresh will req a new board. What I've read anyways. Microcode, M.2 support, etc etc

Intel has really muddied the waters with the "Haswell refresh", "Devils Canyon", and Z97 chipset. The best I can come up with is:

The soon to be released Haswell Refresh processors are compatible with the 8 and 9 series chipsets, and use socket 1150. My question is will the UEFI/BIOS update to accommodate Haswell Refresh CPUs be as potentially problematic as the Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge compatibility UEFI/BIOS updates? IMO it shouldn't be, but we will see. It also seems current Haswell processors will work with 9 series chipset boards.

Devils Canyon, while still a Haswell architecture processor on socket 1150, will only be compatible with the Z97 chipset. The good news here is Devils Canyon processors may use solder instead of TIM between the processor die and IHS. Both mainstream Ivy Bridge and Haswell processors use TIM, which is inferior to solder for transferring heat. Intel is not saying what they are using, only that it is a "Improved TIM". If it is not solder, IMO Devils Canyon will be a failure.

Also upcoming is Haswell-E processors, including an eight core desktop Extreme edition, for use with the new X99 chipset. This also supports DDR4 memory.

Surprisingly, the 5th generation Broadwell 14nm processors are compatible with the 9 series chipsets on socket 1150! That seems almost impossible but seems to be true.

We better get our fact sheets right at some point, the forum questions on all of this will be crazy I predict.

This review says they wont support 8 series series boards, due to a different pin layout, although they are still skt1150, however the last bios update I had for my Z87 board stated "support for new 4th Generation CPU's", another downside is although haswell-refresh is expected 11th May, we apparently wont see the K series until Q3 of this year :-(

    Read more at http://www.legitreviews.com/hands-on...tGjQbYoScyb.99

And then yet this review says they will be supported by Both 8 and 9 Series chipsets, go figure, guess we will have to wait till they actually come out to really find out.

This was posted 2 yours ago, update: it basically says the bog standard Haswell-Refresh CPU's will be supported by both 8 series and 9 series motherboards, BUT, and here's the downside part, the Haswell-Refresh "K" series (unlocked Multiplier) will only be supported by 9 series boards, this is basically Intels way of promoting and making us enthusiasts buying a new motherboard, which all reviews ive read regard 9 series vs 8 series show no difference, thanks Intel, but no thanks.
