Default GA-Z97-D3H bios can't "see" Samsung XP941 in M.2 socket

New build of a GA-Z97-D3H using a Samsung XP941 SSD (part number MZHPU128HCGM-00004) in the M.2 slot. Cannot see drive in BIOS though Windows 7 installer does see it but will not allow installation even after loading the latest Intel SATA RAID/AHCI driver from the Gigabyte site via the Win installer "load driver" function. Have tried numerous BIOS setting combinations with no luck. Have tried booting with Active@Boot and creating partition on drive (both MBR and GPT) setting drive as "active", etc. Gigabyte M.2 Qualified Vendor's List includes my Samsung part number and many other Z97 chipsets (ASUS and ASRock) are reporting success with this combination. Has anybody got this working on a Gigabyte Z97 board?

Have not tried F7- just noticed it today on the Gigabyte site with the description "Improve Intel K-sku CPU performance" Wasn't too excited when I read that description as it didn't appear to address my particular issue but I will give it a try this evening. Running F6 at the moment.

Flashed latest F7 bios dated 06/19/2014- no change in results. Windows installer still sees the drive but reports it as read only. DISKPART reports that READONLY = no, partition is active, BOOT DISK = no.

I would try emailing gigabyte or raise a ticket and link them to this thread/explaining what problems your having

id put it down to a bios bug or poor support

I raised a ticket on 07/04/2014, first response was 07/08/2014. First response was "...shouldn't be any issue..." and "make sure the module is fully seated". Thanks!! I agree there shouldn't be any issue considering the fact that I am using hardware from your supported/approved list! I purchased four of these boards- based on my experience so far most likely my last Gigabyte purchase!!

Is the problem reproducible on all four boards?

    AnandTech | ASRock Z97 Extreme6 Review: Ultra M.2 x4 Tested With XP941

    OS Installation
A topic that has arisen on forums since the launch is whether the M.2 drives can be used as boot drives. For UEFI installation, the detection algorithm in the firmware has to be active to see the drive at the install prompt, however for Legacy installation the drive needs to implement its own firmware at POST. As the XP941 does not have initialization drivers, my Legacy Windows 7 install that I normally do for reviews, while it saw the drive at the OS installation screen, it was unable to hook the drive in to install. This is for both the M.2 x2 and M.2 x4 slots on the ASRock motherboard. Placing the drive into an ASUS motherboard showed no drive at all for Legacy installation, however Kristian has been in contact and confirmed that they are working on enabling UEFI installation for M.2 in a future BIOS update, as should all the manufacturers be if they have not already.
When the motherboard manufacturers have updated UEFIs, the following table should be relevant:
Legacy OS Install UEFI OS Install
    M.2 without M.2 POST Firmware
    (e.g. Samsung XP941)
    No Yes
    M.2 with M.2 POST Firmware
    (e.g. Plextor M6e)
    Yes Yes
