Router and network card

i have just got a router and a network card, i had hoped to split the connection os the adsl to 2 computer however i have no idea or any clue as how to achieve this. i dont know how to set it up wotsover i have got the cards installed i just can't get the ip's sorted out, i also dont know wot a gateway does. adsl works good on one but i cant configure it to work on the other computer? the other computer recognises it is on a network but im not sure how to set it up. Please help Tom
