  • GA-MA785GMT-UD2H Rev 1.0 F9 Won't wake from S3 suspend / sleep

I've been having this problem since December 2009 and I've finally exhausted all my other options related to figuring it. I really need help on this one, because I'm stumped.

I bought a GA-MA785GMT-UD2H to put in an HTPC for my parents. They aren't very tech-savvy, so I wanted to keep everything nice and simple, so they wouldn't have to know too much about what is going on behind the scenes. They have a Home Server, which takes scheduled backups of all systems in the house, but the systems have to be either ON or asleep in order to do it. If they're asleep, they wake themselves long enough to take the backup and then go back to sleep. If enough backups are missed, the server nags them on ALL machines, listing which machines are missing backups, and they just leave those systems on until the message goes away. They hate wasting electricity so this makes them kind mad...

The problem is, on every BIOS I have tried, if the power configuration is set to Suspend Mode S3 (STR), and the system goes to sleep, it can't resume, no matter what. At first I thought it was just an HDMI handshaking problem but last night I installed a Gigabyte Radeon 5450 and it was no better.

I'm about ready to either send the board in for repairs or just buy something else.

Here are the specs, but this is from memory so it might not be as granular as I'd like:

Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H rev 1.0. BIOS updated to F9
AMD Athlon II 240 (Regor) 2.8 GHz @ Stock Everything, auto everything
    G.Skill RipJaws 2x 2GB DDR3-1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL @ a steep underclock, something like 1066 7-7-7-20
Antec 380w power supply, plenty for the scale of this project
Avertv MTVHDDUWB HD Duet PCIe 1x TV Tuner
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM
    ASUS 4x BD-ROM
    LITE-ON 24x DVD Burner
Windows 7 Professional x64, fully updated

Connecting to a Harmon-Kardon AVR which has HDMI support, from 2007-2008, which then connects to a Sony LCDTV via HDMI. All support 1080p and HDMI CEC, and all that jazz. No problems with them with any other HDMI source I've tried, including DVD players, Bluray players, and laptops.

I can't provide a BIOS template but I can say that because it isn't a gaming system, and doesn't need to handle strict workloads, the BIOS is mostly default, other than the peripheral settings. I always disable any unnecessary stuff, and put all SATA controllers on AHCI mode. As for power control settings, it's completely default. In order to keep this error from being a HUGE problem for them (as they have no idea why "the HTPC won't turn on, but it won't turn off either!) I temporarily put it in S1 mode, which I don't like at all...

Help please! I hope I've provided enough information.

EDIT: I forgot to say, this problem does not depend on how the machine goes to sleep. I can let it go idle, I can manually tell it to sleep from the start menu, or I can tell it to sleep from within the Media Center applications, the result is the same: system can't wake up. If I tap the power button, all the fans spin, but no video, or audio, nothing ever comes back. If I then hold the power button, the system will go completely off, and if I press the power button, it will then power up and resume from hibernate, which is as slow as booting in the first place, so doesn't help at all. Having to do all this really frustrates my parents and they don't use the HTPC much because of it.

EDIT: Anyone? Any ideas at all? I'm striking out here.

    Re: GA-MA785GMT-UD2H Rev 1.0 F9 Won't wake from S3 suspend / sleep

Change BIOS option for AMD C1E Support to Enabled.
ACPI Suspend Type - S3(STR) (Default)
    AMD K8 Cool&Quiet control - Auto (Default)

In Windows 7 Control Panel under Hardware select Change Power Saving Settings.
Set time for monitor shut off to 1 minute and put PC to sleep to 2 minutes.
Let it go to sleep in 2 minutes and right click the mouse to resume from sleep.
(Note: No Overclocking of the CPU)

"380w power supply, plenty for the scale of this project"
    ATI Radeon HD 5450 Graphics
    System Requirements
400 Watt or greater power supply recommended
    ATI Radeon

    Gigabyte Manual recommendation:
To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the assistance. I'll clarify a few things.

C1E is enabled, Cool'n'Quiet is always enabled :) , S3(STR) is the only setting that seems to make the problem occur. I have tested lots of other combinations of options, as I have been trying to fix this issue for over 9 months now... I'm not complaining about the board because other than this one issue, it works fantastically. I just wonder if maybe the Rev 1.0 has this as a known issue or something.

CPU isn't overclocked at all, as this is a light-duty HTPC. Stock speeds are more than twice as much as necessary. I've debated underclocking the CPU just to reduce the power footprint.

As for right-clicking the mouse, because this is an HTPC, all the I/O devices are 2.4 GHz wireless. I have a Gyration media center remote (with a display on it <3), and an inexpensive wireless keyboard and mouse. Problem is, most systems do not power the USB wireless adapters enough to resume from sleep from them. Even still, the problem isn't the machine -trying- to resume from sleep, pressing the power button always starts the process... but the system never fully wakes back up. The fans and HDDs spin up, but the video and audio never kick on. I've tried using several different known-good video cards to test this, along with the integrated video of course. The system simply doesn't wake up. If I leave it there for an hour, it'll still never come back. If I try to schedule a wakeup, it might start the same way but because it never wakes back up, the scheduled tasks can't ever begin, and the system will sit in the cabinet, spun up but unable to perform any operation, until someone turns it off and back on again.

The wattage draw at the wall is less than 200w, last I checked. Most power requirements overestimate requirements to account for low-quality power supplies or subcomponents therein. I'm using a really nice power supply (90+% efficient, pretty heavy), but one that doesn't need to handle a tremendous output. CPU is 60w or so, board is no more than 100w, single HDD and dual optical are insignificant. PCIe 1x tuner card is also insignificant, and the GPU is a light-duty model which should draw no more than 50-100w. No matter how I break it down, 380w is sufficient for the project. Box runs very cool, very quiet, and very stable. Only problem I have found is sleep state.

If you really think the PSU is the problem I can test a beefier one I happen to have, but I am 100% certain it is something else.

Do you know of anyone else with this exact board, so we can verify S3 sleep is working properly in the current BIOSes?

I would try using a better power supply. You may not have enough amperage to resume.

Here is another thread about resume from S3 state.

Alright, it's on the to-test list for the next chance I get :)

Thanks for the thread link too, I read through that and the circumstances are similar. Symptoms are almost identical.

Did you test the very latest BIOS?

And test at stock optimized BIOS settings?

You may want to PM the OP because he may not see your inquiry if you don't.

Sorry to bring back the dead. I have the same problem as the OP but mine will resume about half of the time. Its done this since I built it a year ago. I read the other thread as well. I never thought a PSU could be the problem but it is the only thing I have not tried. Well, other than updating to latest Bios but did update from a F5 to F6 because I am getting a 6 core which F6 supports. My board is a GA-MA785GMT-UD2H Rev 1.1 The F5 version was the original and was suppose to correct sleep issues in some cases.

I did not see anything useful on the later Bios updates so I decided to leave it as is. Correct me if wrong but why update to the latest version if it offers nothing to solve my issue? I thought they were not cumulative so that is the reason for my thinking. If no other ideas I'll just upgrade my year old OCZ 550w to a better unit when or if I change the MB to newer technology. Any thoughts are appreciated.

The fact it does not list it does not mean it does not offer solution. They only list the main reason for the release, bug fixes are always possible.
As for the BIOS you need it depends on the CPU you get, look at the CPU support list for the BIOS needed for your CPU.
If you get a new CPU wait and see if the problem persist.

OK, thanks I did not realize that, as I said I thought it only solved a specific issue. Its a 4 core that I might be able to unlock to 6 cores. The F6 bios is for 6 cores so I'll just wait and see what happens.

                      Thanks

                        Re: GA-MA785GMT-UD2H Rev 1.0 F9 Won't wake from S3 suspend / sleep

I went ahead and updated bios from f5 to f6 to f7 then to f8. I am doing this because the new cpu is a 960T Zosma and was released after the f9 bios. After the f8 flash it was OK so I tried to back it up just like I did the others. My problem is it won't backup. After this flash when I hit alt/f12 it brings up the boot drive order. So at this point I'm not sure of what it takes to back it up. Possibly reload the f8 files on the usb stick and try to flash it again and see what happens. Or on the boot drive screen that pops up choose USB HDD? and reboot. Problem is I don't know what that does exactly so I passed on that one. (Note, I am not in the boot order in the bios - its a pop up screen that appears when I use alt/f12.)

I don't want to use jumpers (that starts getting to technical for me) to go to the backup f7 because the computer functions just fine. Can I flash back to the the f7 bios if necessary loading it back on the usb stick? Anyway I'm stopped here, I planned to update to f9 after I backed up the current f8 but since it won't I need your help please.
                        Thanks

I forgot to add, possibly go ahead and update to f9 and if that works then try to back it up?
Also if I should have started a new thread, let me know.

F12 bring a boot drive selection menu. The time to press alt+F12 is right after the keyboard lights flash (PS/2)

Huh? Sorry I don't get your answer. Yes it brings up a boot drive menu when I press alt+f12 after the keyboard flashes. I have to tap the f12 key or it boots into windows. I don't understand the PS2 part. The mouse is a USB mouse and keyboard is USB if that's what you mean? Could I get a little more detail from you or someone?

The previous times when I pressed alt+f12 it backed up the current bios to the backup. That is what I am trying to do. The USB stick is not inserted and it was not inserted on the previous backups. I just want to back it up before I flash to the last and final f9 bios. I'm no techie so I need more detail.

                            Thanks
