  • Upgraded i7 930 to i7 980 on X58A UDR3. One post, then dead machine.

    Hi all,

I have an X58A UD3R mainboard with F4 BIOS and replaced the i7 930 that was in it with a new i7 980. The first post happened, a big red window appeared (however only so short I couldn't read anything at all) then it proceeded to boot, however, the screen went black moments later and never came back. tried resetting BIOS to no avail. Then tried reflashing to latest version of BIOS, and can't do it due to (pick one, tried all of them):
    - qflash not recognising the new BIOS file (filesize incorrect message)
    - made bootable USB stick, flashspi refuses to read the bios file also
    - in despair, read some posts that said @BIOS was the only way, so downloaded it, but:
    - @BIOS refuses to load the downloaded BIOS file (something about serial number not being correct)
    - @BIOS can't seem to find the bios.ini file on ANY of the servers available.

Has the world finally conspired to kill me? This is sucking so much, I'm about to open a bottle #3. Any idea on what else to try?

    Cheers

After many painstaking hours and another bottle of wine, problem found: I have v1.0 of the board, but kept downloading v2.0 firmwares. Another case of the right error message would have saved me hours.

Anyhow, i7 980 now works beautifully, overclocked at 4.5 GHz, renders like a .... tiger! yes, a tiger! Tigers like pepper, too!

    Cheers
