  • DES 2.0 affecting motherboard, no signal to monitor.

    Hi all,
I've been really happy with the X58 G1.Sniper so far, having used it for a couple months with 0 issues. I made the mistake of trying out DES 2.0 (bad history with it). I thought maybe since Gigabyte recommends using it with THIS board, it'd be safe. Well, it froze up when I accessed the advanced options--Windows 7 64-bit, so I force quit it. Then, I tried opening it up several times afterwards and had no success. It was running in background. Thus, I got sick of it and decided to uninstall it. Good riddance. That was likely my mistake because I didn't "turn it off" before the uninstallation. I restarted to complete the uninstall, and I have no video to monitor. But, it still posts, and the OS still loads...Great. Absolutely nothing done so far has worked to rectify the issue. I'm using a RAID 10 set up, but thought that fully clearing the CMOS by removing the battery might help --- nope. Now I have no video and no working OS. I know for certain that DES 2.0 is running still in a stealth mode and causing the problem.

What are my options (because I do NOT want to RMA) to fix this issue. I wish I could get a signal because it's probably just a matter of installing, turning it off, and then uninstalling? I wish I could use another computer to access my own but I can't =( What if I switch up the hard drives or disconnect the raid and use one from another computer? I have to gain access to Bios at least to reenable my raid.

And I guess it goes without saying, this program should NOT be used. Stay away!

    Thank you!
Edit: Tech support was not very helpful and evaded the whole issue of DES causing instability, instead suggesting it may be my other components.

    G1.Sniper, i7-930, 6gb ram, 1200 psu, 570 classified. h100 cpu cooler.

how long did you clear cmos for? sometimes it takes 30mins,sometimes best to leave it out overnight(the mb battery) and then try,it all depends on how badly the cmos is corrupted

the power saving features built into the cpu and win7/xp will be more than enough to save you power,no real need for des,its just a gimmick imo

Re: DES 2.0 affecting motherboard, no signal to monitor.

Thanks for the very fast reply wazza. I removed the battery for about 30 seconds. Am I correctly assuming that DES is running in stealth and affecting power management through the bios? So therefore, if I leave the battery out for a long enough period, it will erase the settings that were thought to be erased after the uninstall? Thanks for clarifying. I will attempt to remove it for a longer period if there's no other option to restore video signal. I already tried (for the heck of it) re-seating the ram and vid card.

it shouldnt run in the bios, not until it loads the os,try for longer first, then you can move on to other things to try,on a few occasions ive cleared cmos and had to remove mb battery for longer, try 30mins+

Fingers crossed, I'm praying it works. I've spent far too long building it just to tear it apart for a tedious RMA from a lousy program. Thanks for the information; can you think of other alternatives that might work?

I don't understand how one issue relates to the other in this situation. What causes no signal? What could be done about it? I've tried so many google searches but not one of them is relevant to this. =/

could be caused by badly corrupted cmos, thats caused by a crash due to overclocking or a program fault, can cause anything really missing hdd's missing ram, clearing the cmos usually fixes it,no signal probably means it cant detect your gpu

Re: DES 2.0 affecting motherboard, no signal to monitor.

I've got another gpu I'm going to try. Clearing the CMOS by removing the battery did not work. Right now I've got a 570 Classified attached and now will use a 460? I don't have anything cheaper.

Edit: Yeah, that didn't work. Predictable. So, should I just bite the bullet and RMA? I see no other way to restore the mobo and thus eliminate the damn DES 2.0.

i felt sure that would fix it,seems very strange for a windows program to knock out your board, does the mb light up ect? fans spin? and is there a debug led clock on that mb? ifso what code is it saying? it should say FF if everything is working, you could try with just one stick of ram aswell see if its a ram detection issue + try with another gpu if you can, would be good to test with another psu if you could borrow one

how long did you remove mb battery for? could leave out overnight if you havnt already

Re: DES 2.0 affecting motherboard, no signal to monitor.

Alright, some success at last. Lazily, the first time, I used another GPU and VGA connection without first removing the other card. So it does seem that it was the other gpu connection causing no screen signal? Interesting... The pc beeps and posts just fine and I'm now in BIOS. So, I'm going to go into OS, try a reinstall of DES, turn it off this time, uninstall, and try again with the original card to determine full status. The phase LEDS still light up at startup indicating that DES is still running in stealth. <---Nope, scratch that theory. If there is no image afterwards, that probably means the (new) card is bad and only coincidental that the DES 2.0 restart knocked out the video? Time to see. no pun intended.

Edit 2: But it's still noted as running as a Windows service in task manager even after turning it off? Uninstall again, this time it IS off.

Edit 3: Yes, the above worked perfectly. No more phase switching at startup.

once in os,you can right click the taskbar/start task manager/processes and look for des program and see if its still running, ifso then right click it and click end process, you can still install/turn off/un install though

Re: DES 2.0 affecting motherboard, no signal to monitor.

To summarize: Using another GPU with a different connection restored signal to monitor. Accessing task manager, I saw that the service was still running despite the fact there was no relevant process. So I reinstalled it, ensured that it was off, and did another uninstall. After the restart, the phase LEDs no longer appeared during POST and once in the OS, the service was now stopped. The other video card was restored to its original place and tried again. There is once again a signal to the monitor and everything is dandy.

Or to make things really easy, I won't ever bother installing this type of software again (something I guess wasn't so obvious to me).

THANK YOU so much for the the help. I felt like it was going to be a minor crisis otherwise.
