Upgrading RAM on my EX58-UD4P

So I've decided to upgrade the ram on my EX58-UD4P which has my 2 year old i7-920. It's running fine at 3.6GHz and I want to keep it that way. Right now, I have 3 x 2GB RAM (6GB G.Skill triple-channel kit). I want to go up to 9GB or 12GB. I guess I have 2 options:

1. Get another G.SKILL 6GB triple-channel ram kit, so all 6 DIMM slots are used up
2. Throw away the G.Skill and get a new 9GB or 12GB triple channel kit

Which is the better option? I heard there were some overclock or voltage issues if I use up all 6 DIMM slots. Also if anyone has any recommendations please send them my way. Thanks!

You should be fine running that much ram with your current overclock. More memory will require more qpi/vtt voltage.

Do they even make a 9gb kit? Looked at new egg and not not see any.

It would require less voltage to get 12gb 3x4gb then it would be to get 12gb 6x2gb. I would opt for the 12gb 2x4gb. I bought some for my UD5 I think it coast me like $75 USD.

You should be fine running that much ram with your current overclock. More memory will require more qpi/vtt voltage.

So it's possible that if i go 6 x 2GB i might need to up the voltage (which could mean higher temps), but if I go 3 x 4GB maybe I can keep voltage as it is right now?

go for whatever is the cheapest option,you probably will have better success with a matched kit idk,but using two different 6gb kits should work fine too,im using two ocz kits on my asus board and no issues though im not overclocked on that mb,qpi/vtt is at 1.3750v,qpi voltage wont add much heat compared to cpu voltage

The only thing with the memory kit that I linked to you is I could not get my kit to run at 1t It would only boot with 2t. Now it maybe because I did not give it enough qpi/vtt or not but it seems to run fine at 2t. So that maybe one thing you may want to consider. I thought it would not run 1t because of 12gb but I guess that is not the case as wazza has 12gb running at 1t.

Edit here is pic of cpu-z I do not know how much qpi/vtt i am running atm I think around 1.5ish.

In case anyone is curious what I did... I bought a new 12GB triple channel memory kit. Corsair Vengeance 3 x 4GB kit (DDR-1600, 1.5v, 9-9-9-24-1T)

I am basically running it at the exact same performance specs as my old 6GB ram. Same V_dimm, same qpi/vtt. 100% stable in IntelBurnTest, memtest86+. I'm pretty happy with it.

Glad to hear you got your new ram.

You upgraded from 6gb kit to a 12gb kit and system is stable with out added qpi/vtt and is 100% LinX stable? Hard to believe but hey anything is possible. When testing with LinX did you make sure to test all ram?
