  • Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 First time build help needed

    Hello,
This is my first time building a new computer
from scratch and need some advice.

First: Here is what I have to work with:

    Motherboard: GA-X79-UD5
    CPU: Intel i7-3820
Cooling: Corsair H100 twin fan water
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 4096MBx4 (16GB)
    Boot Drives: (2 for RAID 0) Plextor M3 SATA 6Gb/s 128MB SSDs
Video: evga Geforce 560 TI Superclock
PowerSupply: Radmax RX-850 AE 80Plus Gold
    DVD Drive: Asus from Newegg
Case: CoolerMaster 932 HAF Full Tower Advanced

Second: What I am concerned about is where exactly what
slots I should put the memory in.

Third: How to Set up the BOOT drive using the two
    Plextor SSDs.

I am a little lost looking at the Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5
user's manual. Should the memory go in slots 4,2,1 and 3? It
    is 4 channel Memory.

Setting up the SSDs in RAID 0 is what I am really lost
on. Here are the steps I plan on:
    1: Plug the SSD drives on SATA3 0 and SATA3 1
    Intel X79 Controllers at 6Gb/s I hope.
2: Enter RAID Bios to RAID Mode, reboot
3: Configure RAID Array and go to main menu and
    Create Volume and select disks.
4: Do I use a whatever default size for Strip size or
Should I change it for 2 128Gb SSDs?

I Should have the RAID set up before I install Windows but
when do I install the drivers for the chipset. The manual
says to install the drivers after the operating system.

I will be posting this in a couple of different forums to
    get a quicker response.
Thank You all for the help!

I can't imagine of a way making it more clear than they did with the table's slot numbers match the position on board.

just set to raid install windows, windows will install raid drivers for you,you then simply update them later from within windows and install intel rst rapid storage technology drivers and reboot, then press ctrl and i to enter the raid console,as for the ram no idea on that board but the manual with outlay the correct slots and numbers

The slots are also labeled on the board PCB itself, so all you have to do is check the manual table and see which per the amount of sticks you install.

Then install them in the same slots as shown in the manual as mentioned above. So, did you get this all setup and running yet?

YOu have the RAID procedure correct, and you want the largest stripe size (normally 128). You can update chipset drivers and RAID drivers once you install windows, no drivers are needed during the install, but you can optionally install RAID drivers while you install the OS but it's no necessary.

Download the latest drivers directly from Intel or your motherboard page once you are installed, don't use the CD drivers

INF Chipset (You want first link - EXE)

RST (Third link EXE Install in OS)

RST Enterprise (Either one, this or above, will work fine for you)

Or, all are updated (Vs. old on the CD) here for your board, including updated Gigabyte utilities

Everything booted up but now Windows 7 Pro (System Builders Edition) 64Bit asks for cd/dvd driver. I searched forums and I could only find older posts involving Widows 7 RC. My raid is setup right, tried to set both dvd (ASUS DRW-24B1ST) and RAID array as first boot and same error.

            Please help!!

Great to hear you got everything built and put together smoothly, and it's nice to hear there was no issues getting started!

As for the CD/DVD driver issue, this may just be a drive port issue. What hard drives do you have, and what ports do you have them attached to?

You should connect your OS RAID to SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 - first two white Intel ports, then put your CD/DVD on the last Intel port.

YOu do not need any drivers during install, for RAID or AHCI, but you can install them optionally if you want. The RAID pre-install drivers are linked above, you can use either one (RST or RST Enterprise), just download the x64 Pre-install F6 driver version and load that during the install when it asks. It shouldn't be asking you though, so that is why I asked about the ports, it sounds like you might have RAID setup on the Marvell ports or something instead of the Intel ports. You don't want that, so be sure you are using the Intel ports (White)

I had the SSDs on the intel sata3 0/1 ports. It worked when I loaded the Intel sata drivers when it asked for the CD/DVD drivers.

Of course nothing ever works just like the manual says. Thank God for everyones help on the Forums!

Re: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 First time build help needed

On the X79 you do need to load the smaller f6 driver during install. The drives or arrays are not seen till you do. The box where you would normally tell windows where to install is empty till you load those drivers.

Great to see you got windows installed finally!

Thanks DooRules, I have X79 but I wasn't aware of that being required now, I guess this is due to the enterpirse drivers being needed? That's probably why I had to change to AHCI when I moved my RAID Set drive over from Z68 to X79 board, I knew something wasn't right! Haha, in all the confusion, I went and ahead and updated to the enterprise drivers, and left in the old RST drivers too, both can be opened and used, so not sure why you can't then remove the enterprise drivers? Do you know of any method to remove them and revert back to the normal RST? I haven't tried yet, but I have heard you cannot and once you do you only get BSOD no matter what you try after removing RSTe drivers.

                    See, both installed?

You can use the 11 series driver on the x79, just a little grief to do it the first time, easy peasy after that. Especially for a man of your talents.

This is how I do it bud...

System is in raid mode with the E drivers loaded. The only reason I have to use the E driver at all is to enable write back cache in the IRST control panel. So make sure that it's enabled before moving on.
I download the 11 series driver from station drivers, not from Intel ( not a typo, lol ) because the Intel driver only comes with the windows installer and that will not work on the x79. ( the 11 series driver I mean )
                        intel drivers pour Raid/Sata/Ata/Ahci

There is only one file in the download you are looking for after unpacking the driver. You need the x64 file, nothing else.
The only way I currently know of to load this new 11 series driver is through the device manager. Go to storage manager, update driver--- browse my puter --- let me pick from a list of devices --- highlight controller --- have disk --- new box opens, use drop down to load the x64 file, Done

It will prompt for reboot, if not, you have farked up.

Now, one last thing, I am on Intel ssd's so I want to have use of my Intel Toolbox, the 11 series driver gives me full toolbox functionality, but it also makes the IRST control panel error out if you try to open it. No biggie to me, don't need it. But this is why I say above to make sure you start with E driver first so you can get into the irst cp to enable wbc. Just doing it in the device manger won't get it done
After this I go to control panel, programs and I uninstall the E driver, or what is left of it. I have had ZERO issues from doing this and I have been doing this since day 1 when I saw the nasty performance of those E drivers.

Looks like a lot to do, takes a few seconds is all, the first time, oh my I went around in circles for a while.

Re: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 First time build help needed

None installed eh! That's even better than my both installed!

Well I was actually using 11 before installing the enterprise ones, that's how there came to be both installed! All I did was move a drive from Z68 to X79, and change the BIOS from RAID to AHCI since RAID wasn't bootable, however I never did open the app until after I installed the enterprise versions. After I installed the enterprise ones though I could open either interface without any problems..

Haha, thanks, yes a man of my talents should have no problem installing them again, and I've read a few posts on how to do it too. But the thing is I've only read people saying once you install the enterprise versions you can't uninstall it without doing a clean install again to get windows bootable again. Is that not true, I can uninstall the enterprise drivers?

A man of my talents comes in now, I can extract the installer from Intel directly! Woohooo! Haha! But yes, I'll keep reading your method of course! If you want to know how to extract the windows installers let me know, it's easy!

Ya, I don't need or use the Intel interface either, so no worries there! So can I remove the enterprise drivers and program, or you are not sure? Also, I'm not 100% sure I can even switch to RAID mode now, since I had to switch to AHCI to even get into windows, but that may have just been before since I moved disks from Z68 to X79 without the E drivers loaded. I think your method is just switching some of the control drivers, maybe all maybe not. I'd like to remove it all, then start over clean with 11. So do you know if it's possible to uninstall the drivers or not? I mean I know it is, but do you know if it's possible to do and still use your windows afterward?

I guess I can always mirror by drive, do the uninstall and see if I have to fix it myself somehow manually, and then if so find the fix and document the method for others. I probably should do that because everyone I've read commenting on that says it's not possible.

Thanks for your thoughts and method though, but I'm still looking for further info or answers I think. I know the E drivers will get better too, so not sure it's even worth my time looking into all this, but I guess I should so I can help others who want to fully switch back like I'm thinking of doing. I didn't have any Enterprise drivers installed at all for several days on X79 and was in AHCI mode using the V11 drivers without any issues, from a disk moved from Z68 to X79 with RST 11 already installed and no E drivers at all, so it is possible to never load them at all, I just need to find out how to go back to that I think (Just to know how, and or be able to tell others how).

You can 100% toss the E drivers without issue , or bsod, lol.

I do this because I am in raid, and the bench numbers are night and day.

I cannot remember the last time i was in a single drive OS environment, so I cannot really say how a single drive setup will work with this bud.

Ohh really!?!?!? Awesome, that's great to hear, I've been holding back for a few days due to reading it wasn't possible at a few places, then I couldn't find those posts again so I wasn't sure anymore so I decided to ask.

I use RAID for single drives and RAID SSD's too, just happen to be on a single disk right now as I have my other two SSD's tied up in testing other systems this week. I always run single drive RAID's without issue, do you mean you just haven't tested single drive RAID on the Enterprise drivers, or your work around? I'll get to what I want now that I know I can safely uninstall those E drivers, I guess I'm just talking myself in circles now, that was all that's been holding me back, nothing will stop me now
