  • GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

I will start with my specs.

Motherboard, Cpu, Ram, SSD (Using Intel Smart Response)......Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

    Power Supply

Hdd with OS... not really sure the specs on it, i got it out of my dads pc from a while ago, it is sata, 80gb.

    OS....Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

GPU (yes i know it's old and not all that great, but i play like wow, and civ 5 so not much is needed)

Case is actually just my fiancees old compaq presario or something that i cut a bit to get the psu in and added a fan up from.

    I think that's about it
Ok so now the problem. I have really long boot times, 5mins +. I have looked online and seen to use event finder. Well the problem with that is it starts from the windows logo and goes from there. My boot freezing actually happens right before that at a black screen with a blinking cursor and it just sits there for about 2-3 minutes. It then shows the windows logo screen except the logo doesn't start to appear for about 2-3 minutes. Once the logo appears its off to the races and everything is fine and dandy. This only happens with a cold boot, it doesn't happen with a restart. Well i don't restart it much. Usually just turn it off when i'm done and turn it back on when i want to use it. So it may be turned on like 2 maybe 3 times a day for maybe a total of 3 hours on time. Any changes in the bios will make my computer boot fine for the first boot then after it will take forever again. I'm thinking maybe because it's more like a restart. I thought this was due to a very low psu max rating at 160W, yes im aware i'm lucky i didn't fry anything, or maybe i did and that's what's wrong. That is why i have the 700W psu now and the fact i got it for 63% off...lol. What else....It doesn't boot this slow every single time I cold boot it, just most of the time. If there is any more info i need to give please let me know or if there are any suggests i could really use them. I am a little tech savy but not like hugely as this is about the 3rd pc i have built for friend or family, first for me and of course this is the one with issues... Thanks guys.

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

is the hdd sata or sata2? your running raid mode?

if its sata then that could be your problem,im getting 30secs with caching

use intel ports only, intel sata3 for your ssd and intel sata2 for hdd, turn off marvell ports if not needed it will improve bootup time

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

My Hdd is samsung model hd080hj so Sata II.
Yes i'm running in raid mode, for the cache effect of the ssd.
I had both on sata 3 ports and moved the hdd to the sata 2 port.
This changed stuff so it started fast the first time but was back to being very slow again on the second time i tried to start.
I'm not sure what marvell ports are or where to turn them off.

      Thanks for the help

should be in the bios somewhere marvell sata and maybe jbm storage, ive turned mine off as i dont use them

using latest intel rst drivers? if not install those it will help, cant think of what else you could try,see if disabling pll overvoltage helps,if not re enable it

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

What ALL USB devices do you have connected, this included hubs, media readers, printers, ect? If any, remove them and try booting again and see if it's fast, if it is go into the BIOS and disable Legacy USB Storage (Or Legacy USB Detect) and connect all USB devices again and test. If it's still slow then, remove all again and then test again plugging in only one at a time until you find the culprit,

Aside from that, is this a clean install of windows? If not, how old is it? And, have you tested a clean install, as it may just be a windows install issue, or other driver or programs causing the problem, which it's kind of sounding like to me since it appears to be slowing down after the BIOS has already handed the board over to windows. But, your saying it's normal on reboots after you've been using windows is what lead me to the USB comments, so it could be that as well.

Also, please test your memory for at least 5-10 full passes or overnight with this latest version of Memtest86+

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

I tried to update bios using the tool that came with the pc but it just loaded f9 again even though gigabyte website shows f10 so i might try again later.
I wasn't sure if i had the latest isr driver so i just downloaded the newest, installed, restarted, shut down then restart and it restarted like it should. So so far so good.
My usb devices include....Cannon i350 printer, WD 1tb external hdd, logitech ex 100 wireless mouse and keyboard, and everyone once in a while my samsung galaxy epic 4g phone.
It was a new install about a month ago and since put a few things such as....avg, gamefly client, steam, firefox, google chrome, and safari (use them for different websites)....
I don't recall this happening when it was a clean install but could be wrong.
I did try a ram tester with no errors for about 1.5 hours....Using memtest... it got to about 250% lol and i thought that was high enough.

I work third shift so its bed time but thank you both for your help and suggestions and i will check back and let you know if anything changes later today.

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

Ok so i turned of the legacy usb detect. and unplugged my external hdd and printer and started my pc like 5 times all resulting in fast startups. I then plugged my external back in and it was still running fast. So i guess it's the printer and it's driver?

Thanks again both of you, I would never have thought of any of that stuff.

Re: GIGABYTE GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Extremely slow boot time

Use Qflash with a USB stick to update the BIOS, here's a guide on how to use it.
                http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...ash-guide.html

If you feel you must use @BIOS, please uninstall the version you have installed from the CD, and download the latest one here (NOT X79 or AMD Version)
                http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...ity-tools.html

Then download the BIOS you want from our main BIOS sticky here on the forum, or from the website for your board at Gigabyte's site. Then in @BIOS click clear DMI pool, then "Update From File" button, and browse to the extracted BIOS file (You must extract the BIOS file from the exe if you download from Gigabyte's site)

And after you update you should load optimized defaults, then save/apply/reboot BACK TO BIOS, then once in the BIOS again set your SATA settings for windows, memory voltage, and any other changes you need (Not overclock though). Then save/apply/reboot to windows. Then reboot from windows and flash the backup BIOS to match the main BIOS, here's how to do that, and you may need to use a PS/2 keyboard or USb to PS/2 adapter
GIGABYTE Tech Daily: Video guide how to update your backup bios on GIGABYTE P67 boards

Nice, sounds like you are making progress on finding what's causing the slowed boot time! Now, plug back in those other two items one at a time, with full shut down between, and test if either of those cause the issue. Or is all you have left the printer itself? If so, test it as mentioned and see if it still boots fast. If it does, then just disabling the Legacy USB Scan in the BIOS is what fixed it.

On that, please note that you must have that enabled to flash via USB with Qflash, you can disable once you are done with the flash in the new BIOS.
