  • Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

    Greetings all.

Coming on here to ask a quick question. Recently updated my rig with the following components:

    - Z87X-UD4H
    - Intel 4770K
    - Asus R9 280X
    - Crucial Ballistix PC12800 x 32 GB

All was installed and working great right off the bat. Updated BIOS to F7 and no issues for well over a month with the PC.

Recently, the only change that was made was replacing my Logitech C910 webcam with a Logitech C920.

Now, I seem to have a cold boot issue, where my PC, when sitting over night, will not boot when turned on. The PC will power up, the my LED's on my CM QuickFire light up, and the fans spin up, but no video. I simply have to power the PC down holding the power button, and then turn it on again, at which time it boots right up.

Any idea what could be wrong? Could the new webcam some how be causing this?

    Thanks for any help!

Are you using a powered USB hub? If so, unplug it and retry.

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

Only USB devices attached at my Logitech G9, CM Quickfire Pro keyboard, and Logitech C920 Webcam.

        Other than that, nothing.

And an additional note. It looks like the issue isn't just on cold boot. I rebooted my PC a little while ago and it went down, but never came back up. I hit the reset button on the case, and then boom, right into Windows.

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

Ok, this may be a help as well.

When the I get no video on boot, the debug code on the mobo is '97'.

From what I can see, this looks to be video card related. Odd, though, that this just started up this week after more than a month of running with no issue. Any insight on that code?

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

cold boots are usually memory/voltage related

it simply could be hanging at the gpu detection at startup, not sure on haswell but id try a slight (one or two clicks) more imc/vtt votage esp with 32gb of memory,be sure to flash to latest bios aswell

            could try latest beta bios

GA-Z87X-UD4H - F8b http://www.mediafire.com/?ctvum2uvyl5xaxt you can always flash back if you prefer the prev bios,be sure to use a usb mem stick and qflash and update in the bios

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

What os are you on? If its windows 8. It could be a hibernation issue. When you shut down your pc it uses a feature called fastboot that actually hibernates the system. Maybe, a usb device is the cause but try turning fastboot off. If you are on
              windows 7 disregard this.

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

It's Windows 7, and I've turned hibernation off completely.

I've upgraded to the new f8 beta BIOS to see if that fixes the issue. If not, I'm going to try unplugging the webcam, as that's really the only other difference I can think of.

New BIOS doesn't fix the issue. Same problem. On a reboot, I get no video and code 97 shows on the board. I push the reset button and the PC boots right up, video and all.

Any idea why this would be?

tried booting up without the new webcam just to see if its that that's causing the non boot?

Haven't yet. I updated to the "tweaked" f8b BIOS to see if that would fix the issue. Seemed promising, as the PC booted up fine the first 8 or so tries. Then, when turned on again today, same thing. Code 97 and no video.

I'll give the camera a try next.

                        Just an update...

Two days with the C920 unplugged, and so far, so good. PC has booted right up, every time, which is about 8 or so now. Going to let it go like this for a while and see what happens.

Good to know, My cold boot issues with the motherboard usually occurred after deep sleep. I sometimes had to unplug and re plug my usb wireless or some other usb3 device attached to the motherboard. Doesn't usually occur if I shut down completely before the next cold boot. I believe it's voltage issues with connected devices or some kind of static. Am on bios F7 by the way. I hope your issues are resolved now.

Re: Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Cold Boot Issue.

I'm assuming all the USB ports on the back of the board are USB3, correct? If so, then yes, it was plugged into USB 3.

Still no problems booting up at all. In fact, I'd even venture to say video comes up much quicker. May just be a placebo effect, but it seems that way to me.

The question is, though, why would a webcam cause this to happen simply being plugged in? Any why doesn't the issue happen every time, just some of the time?
